Herbs

She sat in the corner, her mind wandering. Thinking of the last few conversations they had. How did it get from “I love you” to “I hate you”. What was the tipping point?

They had met at the supermarket. Nothing romantic about it. But they kept running into each other at the herbs section and the next thing you know they were moving in.

When he proposed, it was so well planned that she had to say yes even though she wasn’t absolutely sure by then.

Based on the grocery list she had prepared, he placed bits and pieces of the proposal in jars with her favourite herbs at strategic spots. And the grand finale was with him proposing over the intercom. Everybody had gathered and were cheering. She could only say a yes.

But at home they argued because she was irritated that he didn’t give her a chance to think about it. She felt cornered to say yes. He said that if she was having second thoughts she just had to say it. She said that she didn’t have first thoughts to begin with. And on and on and on.

They used to enjoy smoking it together. Joking others would be green with envy of what they had. But of late she wanted to drop it. She was reading and hearing one too many stories and she didn’t want to be part of the statistics.

The arguments they’ve had and sometimes non-arguments because he’d just zone out had been gnawing at her. Chipping away at the good times. The sawdust burying the laughter.

“It’s a herb and it’s legal in some countries!!”

“We are not in some countries! We are in this country where you’ll get hanged!”

“Don’t be so dramatic!! Even celebrities take it and they’ve been caught and the only thing hanging is another joint from their lips at the next opportunity!”

“Try that argument when you get caught. It’s not legal!! And I am not starting our life together like that!!”

“Wow!! Like really wow!! We did start our relationship like that!! If you want to say No, just say it!”

She looked at him. Closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
