The Big Dog is Arrogant! | Fiction Writing Prompt & Day 373 Freewrite

PART I

Queeny was licking her tiny paws out on the patio.

Red, yellow and orange leaves were falling all around her in a slow trance-like manner. All the better, for she looked forward to the fast approaching winter, where white blankets will envelop the streets and she will be safely nestled with her favourite two-leg near the fireplace back home.

But for now, she'll enjoy the cooling breeze. Queeny continued her elaborate cleansing ritual, daintily using her clean paws to wipe her forehead.

"What are you doing here?!" A deep guttural growl disrupted Queeny's idyllic peace and made her yowl in fright. She leapt up from the floor to the top of the marble railing, only to look down at a huge German Shepherd. Mutty was staring at her with an intensely fierce stare, the kind that police give to criminals they adjudged guilty before proven so.

His ears were perched straight up, as alert as they could be, while his eyes gradually narrowed. "Aren't you supposed to be out and not back til the sun goes down?"

"I wanted to rest." Queeny meowed softly in response to his extremely loud barks - and continued rubbing her head with her paws (this time not to cleanse, but out of nervousness).

"Rest? Or are you just pathetic at catching mice?" Mutty smirked at the long furred Persian who was crouching very low.

Queeny winced. That hit hard.

Since she was a kitty few weeks old she had already known she was unlike other cats. Queeny hated hunting, unlike her brothers-and-sisters-of-the-same-litter who would go into a bloodied frenzy and kill birds as well as other small creatures. She always thought that killing them was unnecessary because two-leg already gave them plenty of raw food.

And they always thought that she was too sensitive.

"I'll go." Queeny meowed quietly after looking at Mutty with plaintive eyes. With a single graceful leap, she got down from the railing and walked across the lawn. She frankly had no intention of hunting but she just wanted to avoid Mutty who was a merciless bully like the rest of her brothers-and-sisters-of-the-same-litter.

PART II

Mutty stared as Queeny became a small tiny white dot in the horizon. He was utterly mesmerized by the way she moved, no, danced - though he will never admit it, no, not to anyone. Queeny's regal mein was the subject of his daydreams, though he tried to bark at himself to chase these silly thoughts away.

And there was her electric blue eyes...

So beautiful.

Mutty sighed and gulped hard. He knew there was something different, something special about Queeny from the first time two-leg brought that litter of kittens back, but dogs and cats were supposed to be sworn enemies. All he could do to keep that distance was to put on a faux bravado.

Mutty knew Queeny thought he hated her, but it was far from the truth.

She would never know.

This anthropomorphic short story is dedicated to my furry friend, Tiger, who accompanies me on most days. <3

(Tiger says hi back, albeit somewhat unimpressed.)
