Chapter 5
"I know you were hoping for theatre tickets this year," Janice's mother stood in the living room doorway, her threadbare robe hung loosely open, and her full mug of coffee weighed down the hand that clearly wanted to gesticulate wildly.
"And so that's what we got you," finished her father. His broad smile told Janice that it had taken a little convincing to get mom to deliver the news in this particular way. Cold December breezes banged a brought snow-laden branch against the window. Janice felt warm and cold at the same moment. She looked around the living room, surprised. She expected to only feel cozy and comfortable, but there was something nagging at her mind.
Dad produced a bundle of tickets from his satchel, leaning against the furnace, which was cold this morning for some reason. "Nutcracker at the ballet tomorrow. That one's for all of us. Season tickets to the rep, we got a pair, so you can take a friend... or one of us, hint, hint, well 8 shows in the season, you can vary it. And we didn't get the tix, but you can choose one opera and go solo. They're doing Die Zauberflote, but also, you could wait and just go see that in Vienna in a few years when you're off at college and studying abroad in Europe or some other exotic locale... though if it's not in Vienna, you might not be able to see Die Zauberflote, so, you should go study in Vienna." Dad stopped himself and grinned again. "We love you, kiddo." He took a swig of mom's coffee and plopped on the couch next to Janice, then began rummaging through his stocking until he came up with an orange. "Mmm, coffee orange!" He proclaimed, and began peeling.
Janice reached over and plucked the tickets from dad, then looked up at mom. Her 14-year-old coolness had melted in light of Dad's un-self-conscious goofiness, but when she took in the furrowed brow and pursed lips of mom, it built a new igloo to hide her ego in."Thanks," Janice muttered, and left the room while she could still pretend that coziness was a part of the environment.
Janice reached the bottom of the stairs, put a hand on the railing and-
