Day 154 5 minute Freewrite: "Nothing"

"Nothing"

He’d bought the lumber and all the other materials; the nails, the paint, the chicken-wire—now he just needed to build it.

Rex had been talking about making a birdhouse for a few months now (closer to a year, if you asked his wife, LeAnne).

Regardless—he was determined to get it done.

He printed out instructions from Woodworker’s Glory, the website Rex frequented since they got the internet a few years back; but this was the first time he’d actually tried to build something. (The only other item he'd ever really made was a "chest-of-drawers" with his brother-in-law for their nephew—but the man was a carpenter himself, and that had made all the difference.)

But Rex was no stranger to hard work. He'd spent many a long-day fixing cars with his Pa when he was a boy.

& ...

So he got to working: sawing and cutting and clipping away...

SLAM! SLAM! SLAM! with the hammer, until his fingers were so sore they could barely move.

Then…

Swing! Rex took one last whack and

SNAP!!!!!

He looked down at the hammer; and with a stunned curiosity, thought:

“A wooden handle, eh? Huh.

Never noticed."
