5 min Writing Prompt (Pills) #freewrite

Earlier today he flushed the pills. No more safety, no more guarantees. And no more fog to walk through, day in and day out.

His new day has led him to a patch of scrub next to the railroad tracks, where he used to go to smoke weed when he lived nearby with his mom. Pot was never a social drug for him; he preferred to get high alone. And he got high a lot back then.

Now he's sitting on a clump of tangled grasses, next to a dingy pond. He tries to picture in his mind where he's going, now. A doorway? A hole in the ground? No, no that's no good.

Open skylight. That's it. He's rising through an open skylight.

Take me away, up into the sky. I never liked anybody but now that it's time to go I want to make friends…

The 3:30 Westbound out of Sarnia careens by, rumbling him awake. He brushes off burrs from his clothes and stumbles to his feet. It's only been a day, and dying takes time.

Living takes even longer. He climbs back to the road, smiling up at the naked sky.

Written in five minutes from the writing prompt, "Pills" as part of the #freewrite exercise. Image created by me as well. You can view the prompt here and check out the other entries; ranging from downers to uppers and everything in between. Thanks to @mariannewest for creating this alternative to pharmaceutical therapy.

I have always wondered how people do the freewrite in such a short amount of time. I guess it is a little bit like impromptu speeches (which I can do) but with words I tend to chew over them a bit too much :D

I tend to write it out in my head beforehand, so that by the time I'm typing I've got most of the words down. So the freest part of the freewrite for me is before the time limit. If I had to put a time limit on thinking I'd be in trouble.
