The last thing I remembered from last night was the cork from the champagne bottle flying across the room and catching Greg Johnson right in the ear! What a wild new years party that had been, Jenny and I were finally together. I had spent a lot of time trying to get to know her, my coworker and sometimes friend Jim Desmond was dating Jenny's best friend Nyla, so anything that the two of them were doing Jenny was probably involved in also. Jenny had been dating a real tool for months, but I knew if I could just hang around close eventually an opportunity would arise. I liked Jim all right, but he had a crude sense of humor and an annoying laugh that sounded kind of like someone that had just sucked some ocean water down their air path at the beach. It was a cross between a drain plunger and a braying donkey, so whenever he was around and jokes were being told I would leave the room. But it was worth getting to be closer friends with him if it meant that I could be around Jenny also. I didn't stalk her or anything, actually I rarely even talked to her or looked her way, but I was paying attention and I waited.

That time had come just two days before New Years, Jenny and Bob had been arguing at the club that we all often met at for happy hour. Bob had left in a huff after saying some pretty rotten things to Jenny very publicly and very loudly. Was it enough? She was crying quietly on the other side of the table and Nyla was trying to console her, Jim said that he hoped they had seen the last of Bob because he never liked him that much anyway. Others chimed in and said that she was better off without him, this was good but I stayed out of it. The next day I passed through the mall and casually shopped around in the store where Jenny worked, but I acted like I didn't know that she was anywhere around. When she came up and said hi I acted surprised, how are you after last night I said, did you and Bob patch things up? She lowered her head a little and said no, Bob and I are over, I can't believe he acted that way. Oh no, that's too bad I consoled, that guy should have his head examined. Are you still going to the New Years party I asked? I, I don't know she said, maybe I'm just not sure yet. Well if you do decide to go I would love to escort you I said, I mean I don't want to mess things up between you and Bob if you two might get back together, but I don't have a date if you want to go. Thanks she said, we'll see and she started to go back to work and then suddenly turned back. Okay she said, I'll go with you if your sure that you want to be there with me. As sincerely as I could without sounding overly excited I said certainly, I would love to take her to the party. And there it was, the hard work and patience had all paid off, my foot was in the door and now all that I had to do was not screw things up.

But now it's morning and the party is over, where is everyone? I woke up under an electric blanket having a vague memory of a party game and I had been the rabbit, or was it the fox I can't remember. The blanket was really just what the girls referred to as a throw, they kept one in a basket beside the sofa in case someone crashed there for the night, but they had to unplug it to play the silly game. I didn't mind being silly for just a little while though, because I had been under the blanket with Jenny for a couple of minutes and I could get used to that. But where was Jenny, nobody was in the house but me, I checked everywhere. I stepped outside the duplex and the streets were completely empty and silent. It was then that I saw a wild pig running down the street grunting and squealing, he ran right past me without ever turning or even looking at me. No birds, no people no sound other than that pig, and right here in the middle of the city! Something was wrong, something was bad wrong and suddenly I realized that I was shivering, and it wasn't from the cold.
