Word of the day “Vinyl” - Five Minute Free Write
Vinyl, the outdated and nearly lost media platform but why is it still typically the highest quality? Many people say that are familiar with vinyl it has the best sound quality above all.
A good friend of mine’s older brother was the first person I heard this from, back in the days when Sony was just launching mini disc players he was completely against MP3’s as it bothered him to listen to degraded audio quality. I thought he was nuts as I personally cannot tell the difference but if you have an ear for it then it is definitely obvious!
Personally I am not that familiar with vinyl yet I have seen examples of the difference in audio quality using applications to measure the distortion levels.
Today we are seeing many different initiatives to bring back vinyl records, is it just a tribute to the humble beginnings of recorded music? I think not, in my opinion it must be a realization that above all else quality is number one.
Furthermore look at the longevity, it is the first recorded media source and it is the longest lasting so far with nearly the highest quality possible. Thinking end of the world scenario, the vinyl record may be the only lasting music stores say we suffer something like an EMP pulse. No electricity, no problem just take your record and put it on the crank to play record player you’re good to go.

The vinyl is just etching in the material itself. CD's are also laser etched pits of 1's and 0's. Magnetic energy doesn't scramble a disc, even a CD-R or DVD-R. It is not magnetic media. Go and run magnets all over it, it won't hurt it.
The degradation of the material is the real issue. Magnetic media degrades in as little as 10 years. It could be completely unreadable. People with old VHS tapes, or cassettes think they sound so much worse, but then blame it on the vintage and say that is how it looked then. Not really. The degradation is a loss of quality. With digital data, this could mean the loss of being able to read something altogether.
Good CD's that are burnt and gold coated are said to be good for as much as 20 years and would survive an EMP.
I've gone way off the main topic of what also sounds better. I can appreciate why some people say that the dynamic range is so much better. It is. It is not capped. The issue is that most of our ears really aren't tuned to pick that up or fully appreciate it or the loss of it.
Sometimes even the mix that is used on a CD release or then ripped from a CD into an MP3 is the actual difference in sound. There is a reason that they came out with a lot of CD's that have been re-mastered. It is because the first iteration back in the 80's was lousy. They have better technology today and even back in the 90's to take something that was recorded with vinyl intentions and take that master and bring to the CD. Instead, many of them used vinyl as their source. Any time you make a copy of a copy, there is degradation. You have to go back to the source to get the best copy.
Vinyl is cool and a novelty again, but for as many gadgets that I buy, I don't want to go back to it. The media is easily damaged and it is more difficult to play a single song. I know this changes the paradigm of listening to an album "straight through". I still do that, but by using Spotify or some other music service. And for those groups or singers with only a single songs or two that I know or like, I like to just make them part of a playlist. Changing to another record is just not convenient for me anymore. The purists will still make time for it, but I like the idea of having a jukebox style world, with the option of having the ability to listen to my old albums in their entirety without every touching a turntable or flipping a side.
Ahhh yea very good points, I know the CD and DVD would not be scrambled but would not the electronics within the player be destroyed? Though they are rare in a end of the world scenario we could still play records on some of the very first crank style record players which do not have anything more then a needle to read with and essentially a megaphone to produce audio.
I would want to go back to it either as there are many complications, as you stated. Clunky, easily damaged, hard to seek a specific tune, large use of storage....
Overall I’m pretty happy with my Apple Music subscription, has nearly everything I wish to listen to and then a whole lot I have yet to discover.

The component parts of the electronics wouldn't necessarily be destroyed, but there is a lot of firmware and things that run on emulation chips that perform the functions of what was once discrete electronics that would essentially be erased. From that perspective, you would be right. Even good old vinyl can be played on a hand cranked gramophone with a big horn for a speaker. Vinyl wins. I concede. :)

Likelihood of an entire planet blackout is pretty slim from my understanding. Even with a massive hit from the sun it’s speculated that most electronics will survive on the side furthest from initial impact. An EMP caused from a nuclear blast in the upper atmosphere could knock out most of an area the size of USA but still an entire planetary blackout is extremely slim.
Great discussion, I had basically no idea what remastering was till now.

My husband is an audiophile (a good ear can be expensive, folks!) - but he gave up trying to convert me because vinyl scratches easily and can't be played while driving but CDs are tough and portable. (Now there's MP3, but I'm not there yet.)
Our son became a vinyl man... collecting boxes and boxes of old albums... which are HEAVY. And which are all in my house now, after he high-tailed it to Manhattan to pursue his career as a jazz musician. Five years in Chicago and doing well with upright bass but ... yeah. Vinyl. He'll have to sell it off to pay rent in NYC.
Well maybe it is a good thing your son started collecting records, he may have snagged something the collectors wish to buy. I have heard of a single record selling for the 1000’s in auction it’s just a matter of getting the item in front of the correct buying group.
Good to hear your son is pursuing his passion as a jazz musician, people always say there is no money in music but I don’t believe that to be true. Rather again it’s a matter of finding the right place and time to sell yourself. I have spoken with a few talented pan handler musicians and they state it’s really not difficult to make a killing even without having a place to perform.
I am definitely no audiophile happy to just have music to listen to you no matter the source it comes in, I tend to listen to a lot of radio. I did get pretty heavy into MP3s which after realizing the impact it has on the music industry I’ve switched to paying for a subscription from Apple Music.

Owning a valuable relic is one thing. Finding a buyer is another. And for all I know, nothing we have is worth anything.... except maybe my Ariel doll, the first one released with the Disney movie... still in its box, untouched, because I kept it well hidden from the offspring!
I bet you that would snag a pretty penny front of the right eyes, finding the buyer would be the most difficult without middle men. It’s a culture all it’s own when you get into selling collectibles for highest value and requires much investment of time to know what value you wish to receive. The middle men work to bring down the price so they can keep a percentage while already having a buyer lined up, usually needing to know very wealthy collectors plays a huge part as a middle man and never will a street level seller know the destination.

Oh it most definitely is a fad relative to the retro and being cool but there definitely is a higher range of tones available through the use of records.
I’m not sure I’ll ever get into it myself, if I stumble across a gold or platinum record I’m definitely snagging it!

Welcome again. My husband also believes that vinyl is the best thing. I can't really hear the difference - but I like to listen to podcasts most of the time anyway and they are not coming to me via a record. They will all be lost if we get hit by an EMP pulse :)

I couldn’t imagine what would happen to all of the digital creators and their works, well I can it would be a catastrophe! Then again at that point music would be the least of our worries, pretty well all of society would collapse.
It’s a good thing I started collecting books relevant to providing the information needed in situations like these, I even have one book that describes how to make your own Baghdad battery with maximum output capacity 👍

I loved my vinyl 😍
Can’t say that I have ever used vinyl but I have definitely listened to it, my ears personally don’t pick up the difference between quality maybe too much bass I’ve destroyed my hearing.
Overall it’s good to see the revitalization of the industry even just for the sake of collection.

I wish I still had all my vinyl. I have one of Mom's Johnny Cash albums. I used to have quite a few 45s and LPs.

I still have all my vinyl records and so far nothing is lost. Still warm and full, crackles and all.
