Day 46: 5 Minute Freewrite - Prompt: gullible - My Entry
Here's my entry for the @mariannewest awesome freewrite: gullible. Details can be found here;

My friend Charlie came for a visit recently. It was his first time in Nicaragua so I thought I would show him around Granada. I told him that when we got to the central park not to be a Rube. He just looked at me funny and asked "what's that supposed to mean?" I said "Look, no offense but you have always been kind of gullible. Just trust me."
So I go off for a minute to get us a juice and I come back to see him handing over 100 cordobas to a young girl holding a baby. I didn't say anything and handed him his juice.
Next we grabbed a slice of pizza at a place near the park and Charlie is telling me how I've always been cynical.
Then he sees the girl he recently gave the money to with a group of other young girls. She hands the baby to another girl and then sits in the shade. Charlie knew what I meant when he realized the girls were just using the baby as a prop to solicit donations.
I ordered us a round of beers and suggested we continue our tour.

Hahah sometimes the only way to learn is to try the thing on your own skin ..funny pics too!
True. I found those pics on pixabay and thought they were perfect because of the two different expressions. Story is based on actual events and as always the names have been changed to protect the guilty.

lol...I've been a sucker so many times I guess I finally have learned how to be more discerning. As they used to tell me in the Marines, if we can't make you smarter we will make you stronger. :-)
Most people want to help others but sometimes there's a fine line between helping and enabling negative behavior.
There's a great book I read when I was in my teens that really helped me throughout my life with this idea;
"Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah" by Richard Bach. Quick read, life changing.

Ha ha ha Great! I got taken in by a little boy in Egypt one time at a souvenir stand near the pyramids. We had been dickering over the price of a small stone bust that I was going to take home as a gift, the one that I wanted looked just like several others on his table but it was obviously a lot better quality. He would never accept my offer, that was all of the money that I had left, so I got on the bus. Just as we were pulling away he ran up beside the bus with the item that I wanted indicating that he was ready to trade. So I reached in my pocket and got the money and handed it out the window of the now moving bus and taking the item from his hand. When I sat down I realized that he had switched items while I went for the money lol, at first I was irritated, but then I just started laughing uncontrollably. A good lesson for a young man who had never been to parts of the world where barter was prevalent. And it was also a humbling lesson, if I could so easily be taken in by a little kid I was sure no match for expert grifters.
lol...that kid probably grew up to be a politician. Great story, thanks for sharing. I guess we all need these lessons from time to time.
