It's Just the Dog...

The back of her father's truck disappeared down the road as he headed off to work. She waited at the window, watching the last tendrils of daylight slip from the yard. At last! It was her time. She had been looking forward to this all day.

The girl switched on her father's stereo and carefully checked the settings. She wrote the volume level, CD tray number and track queue on a paper. Having been busted before, she knew to return everything to the settings that he'd left. Selecting a song, she cranked up the volume and pressed "play". Her music erupted from the speakers, filling the house and setting off her solitary dance party.

Living in the sticks, acres away from neighbors, had it's perks. One of them being that you could blare music as loud as she pleased when home alone. Nobody would be able to hear it and complain to her parents about the ruckus their daughter made.

She pranced and wiggled, jumped and jiggled as she danced through the living room, dining room and kitchen. The music filled her and she laughed. She knew that she looked like a spaz. She also couldn't care less. There wasn't anyone around to see her. Imaginary friends didn't count. Neither did her dog. He'd gone upstairs to roll around on her parent's bed anyway.

After a while, she turned off the music, reset the stereo as she found it, then turned off all of the lights. There were still a couple of hours of solitude left and she felt like watching something scary. Her parents had rented Candyman from the store and since they weren't there to ask...

An hour later, every light in the house was blazing bright. The girl, feet safely tucked away from the edge of the couch, peered out from under the blankets that she'd wrapped around herself for protection. The movie wasn't that scary, she told herself, lying. On screen, a therapist was being gutted by Tony Todd's hook. She flinched, burrowing further into the blanket.

Above her, she heard a scuffling noise. It's just the dog, she thought, then froze. Her parent's room was on the other side of the house. And the door to the room above her was kept closed. The sound continued, moving across the ceiling, making the girl wish her mother would get home soon....

What a great movie to watch alone. And it probably was the dog...the ghost dog!

Well, maybe. When we moved into that house, there were two headstones by the shed where the previous owners (who shared my family's surname) had buried their dogs. Yeah. My house came with a little pet cemetery...

Scary! Reminds me of babysitting when I was a teenager and I stupidly watched Are You in the House Alone? Very bad idea.

Yikes!😨 Bad idea indeed! How long did it take for you to be able to watch another horror movie? Or not check all of the doors and windows? Thank you so much for stopping by Eyedreemit!

Brrr... creepy!

You've got that right! Grazie, Marco!

I know the blanketwillprotectme feeling :) And I never, ever watch scary movies - especially not when I am by myself!!
It very much feels like a true story lol

Oh, it's true! (I tell myself that it was just mice in the walls but I was too scared to go and check.)
I'm in my 30's and still have to have a blanket on when I watch horror movies. (And my cell phone at the ready! LOL!!) You're smarter than I am. I shouldn't watch horror movies by myself but, I just love them too much!
