A Loving Exchange

Mildred was drooping in the rocking chair when she felt the releasing pop from suction. Little Karel let out a tiny, wet gurgle as he snuggled his head into her breast. Finally. Rising, she wiped the drips of spit and her milk from his lips while stepping carefully to the crib. Placing a loving kiss to his brow, she laid her child in his crib.

She stood, stroking a finger against the silky skin of his hand. It was a shame that she couldn't stay. Watching over her children while they slept gave her roiling mind a respite. A moment of peace from the bustle of people in the house and the endless drudgery of work. With a soft smile, Mildred promised her sleeping sweeting that she'd finish up quickly and return. "Soon, luv. Mommy will have a surprise for you."

Mister passed her in the hallway outside Josef's room. Stroking his lip, he leaned close, eyeing her breasts. Mildred knew what he wanted, same as every night. "Nearly finished?" Not giving his wet-nurse the time to respond, he peered around, made sure there weren't any ears listening then muttered, "Don't tarry with my son tonight. Come to me in the garden." He straightened and strode off, his mind on the delights hidden under his employee's skirts.

Your son? Mildred thought, opening the door and crossing to the sleeping babe. Dirty bastard. Lifting Josef slowly, she cradled him to her chest. It wouldn't do for him to wake, not now. She had to meet them before the dawn crested over the hills. You give more attention to your erection than to your offspring.

Quietly, she slipped down the stairwell, past the dark, opulent dining room and out the kitchen's doorway. Her feet sped along the stone pathway as she veered away from the hedges outlining the garden. Holding little Josef close, she stopped, glanced around to assure herself she wasn't seen, then crossed the remainder of the lawn, heaving a sigh when she entered the safety of the woods.

Excitement rushed through her when she saw the stack of stones by a towering oak. The sign was still there! She wasn't late! Placing baby Josef on the ground in front of them, she turned and sat on a log, staring back towards the estate.

A rustle from the undergrowth of leaves and vines made her want to turn, to watch as the exchange was made. Mildred gripped her skirts and fought the urge. She didn't dare do anything to muck this up. Not when she'd wanted a third baby. Her little family was so close to being complete.

The grunts and scuffling behind her quieted. Eagerly, she turned, looking at the beautiful bundle her goblin friends had left behind. She couldn't wait to see the looks on little Karel and Thomas faces when she brought home their new brother. Much better than that ugly, whining scrap made from the Bastard and his dour wife.

Pride filled her as she lifted the Not-Josef up. Cooing softly, she placed loving kisses to her sweet baby. "Come, little one. Let's get you home."

I don't know if it it's a beautiful story or a scary one... :)

Aww, thank you Marie-Jay! 🤗 I started off with her in loving her employer's children too much and the next thing I knew, she was trading the babies for changelings. Gotta love where stories take you!

WOW!!!!!!!! was not expecting that! :D

Hahaha! Happy to surprise you Snook! 😎

OOooh, holy beans this was awesome writing!!! I really love how you captured that... indescribable 'vibe' of the old... UGH. I suck at words today. I read a lot of historical fiction and I just love it when a writers captures the whole entire essence of the time period.

I feel like I'm still not getting my point across, but I loved it :)

It warms my heart to know that you enjoyed the story Byn! I've not written much outside of a modern setting so your comment really means a lot to me. Thank you so much! 💜

I really loved it. I LOVE historical fiction and have really wanted to write some, but for some reason I'm hesitant to really give it a try. I'm afraid of missing the boat... even though I have read more of that than anything else (and even teaching history to my kids made me LOVE history as well)

Instead I write the stuff that I never read/watch, go figure!

I think that you'll be aces once you dive in! Since you've read so much I imagine that you'll have a high standard for how you want your piece to turn out. (Though, you know the drill, don't be critical.) Hell, all of your stuff is top notch. I bet that when you do write a period story, it'll be rich with realism and the grit of times forgotten. Giving the past your Byn touch is something I really want to read now!
