THE BIG FREEZE (5-minute Freewrite)

Darkness fell, and flooded the flat farm lands of western Sussex County. Father and Mother. Brother and Sister. Even Dog and Cat were all inside. In the light. In the warmth. In the safe walls of the home.

Spring, Summer, and Fall were different. A time to run and play. A time to sow seed, water, and nurture. A time to harvest and celebrate the work completed. Tonight was different. So much different.

Blades of grass stood erect. Dark leaves, brown and rust colored, shivered in the breeze. Then their tenuous hold snapped and they tumbled to the frost covered ground below.

Winter had arrived. Night came just before dinner. Cold filled rooms just before wood stove fires. The big freeze was once again upon the small town and her fragile people.
