TEMPLES MADE WITH HANDS (5-minute Freewrite)

She stood before the assembled elders to speak. The tremble in her voice belied the confidence of her statement, and the clear course she proposed.

"I stand before you confused. The way was clear. The plan decided. Now, all is ruin."

The group murmered and swayed. Their faces danced in and out of the ember light, turning left and right to confer with one another.

"Before the culling, when we agree life was good, we strove with purpose to advance our kingdom. Now," she paused, not for emphasis, but to gather her composure. "We stand at a crossroad at the edge of a vast ravine. We leap, and perhaps die. Or we retreat, and death is certain."

The swell of anger washed over her like a tsunami crashing on the soft white sands of their nation's shore. Shouts in favor, and those in opposition, rose to a crescendo in the tight packed space.

"These temples made with hands have collapsed," she muttered, under her breath.
