REMOTE (5-minute Freewrite)

The remote filled his hand with a familiar comfort. Had there ever been a time when the remote did not exist? Not in his lifetime. He can remember aged photos of himself as he crawled across shag carpet toward a large black and metal brick covered in buttons. His first TV came with a sleek, all black, universal remote. He had saved up all summer for that large screen monster.

In college, that remote was joined by three more. A stereo remote, a light display remote, and a bed remote. How he ever convinced his parents to buy him that massaging bed for a dorm room he will never know.

Now, at middle age, he was down to just two remotes. One controlled the television, the other the game console. And the game console remote felt so comfortable to hold and grip. Almost an extension of himself.

Or was it a cancerous growth? He once had goals. He once pursued fame and fortune, and everything that goes with it. (I thank you all!) But now he just sat. Holding his remote. How can he free himself of the habit of grabbing that remote?
