PASSENGER (5-minute Freewrite)

The familiar tick-tick-tick continued to sound in her ear. At this late stage in her life, the sound was a comfort. But, oh my, what a dreadful fear that noise elicited when she was young.

The plush cushion of the passenger train supported her ample weight. The gas fed lanterns glowed, and shared their warmth with her as she looked out the window. Pastures, farmhouses, barns, small churches, a school house now and then. Each one a small, but significant, indication that they were laying claim to the once wild west. The land was being settled.

As the whistle sounded for her stop, the woman heaved herself up onto high heeled laced leather boots. What was modest fashion before would now set her apart in the small backwater town.

She stepped onto the platform. The tick stopped. She rubbed her ear.

Out fell a small creature. Strange, curious eyes glanced at her. The creature ticked. And ran off to a new claim of its own.
