NOT IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD (5-minute Freewrite)

Dick Garundy had given out apples at Halloween for the last forty seven years, until his wife died last Fall. That year, the fun of Halloween seemed to escape him like ground fog fled from the light of the sun. But it wasn't just his wife's departure. The neighborhood had changed too. For the worse.

When Dick and Norma moved into the quaint development there were just a few new homes. The streets were not yet paved, there were no sidewalks, and the street lamps had not yet been installed. Over time, more young families moved in, and more improvements made it one of the best communities in their small town. For a time, Peaceful Grove was the envy of the area.

After Norma passed, everything got darker. Each year, more and more trick-or-treaters of older and older ages arrived. Someone started dropping off bus loads of children. Buses! It made Dick so irate to see grown teenagers enjoying a night meant for children. So this year, he made his apples extra special, and got his revenge.
