MOTH (5-minute Freewrite)

Most moths miss the opportunity. Pesticides, bug zappers, over zealous children. So varied are the threats to a moth's short life, that so few ever attain their ultimate purpose.

But a few do. One in particular.

The small larvae worked hard the first few days of life to grow large, and locate a safe spot for his cocoon. Once secured, he spun a shell to wait out his metamorphosis and change to a glorious fluttering night flyer.

Caution was his watch word. Danger his constant companion and greatest obstacle. But he persevered. And lived a long and storied life. Long for a moth.

Several weeks after he transformed, the dusted wings of the fattened moth slowed to a erratic tempo. And stopped.

He came to rest on the window sill of a hospital. The open window drafted and spilled his carapace onto the floor. A doctor crushed his exoskeleton and freed his soul. It floated up, twirled in the draft, and drifted over a stillborn's lifeless corpse.

At once, the moth's soul was pulled down and became the breath of life which reignited a new born baby, and embedded new hope deep into a young mother's heart.
