I KNOW (5-minute Freewrite)

"I know," she said. Her hackles were really up now.

"You cannot just stay at a boy's house, Caroline," said Mrs. Jennings.

"I know." She knew.

"The neighbors. The Ladies Auxiliary," her mother continued the list of those who would shame her. "The Bridge Club. Women of His Word. Oh, Caroline, honestly!"

"I know." OK, she was maybe a bit to blame.

"Wait until your father..."

"I know." And boy did she. It was always worse when Dear Old Dad got into the mix.

"Caroline. Don't you care about my nerves," said Angelia Jennings, née Moyer. She didn't have a diagnosed nerve issue. Psychological, Caroline thought, might be another matter.

"I know. Alright."

"No! It is not alright," Mrs. Jennings said. Her eyebrows rose much higher than the beautician intended when they were sculpted on Wednesday. "It is not in the least bit OK to sleep over at a boy's." But, she supposed, she knew at that age too.
