FLASHLIGHT (5-minute Freewrite)

The flashlight whirled in a circle tossing its beam of light onto the south wall, door, north wall, and window in rapid succession. Their shadows sprang into life, and died just as quick. Thomas, Ellen, Sue, Jack. Thomas, Ellen, Sue, Jack. Thomas, Ellen, Sue, Jack.

Then the flashlight slowed. The rumble of the plastic casing on the hard wood floor set their nerves on end. At last the clack of the thumb switch put the cylinder to rest in its final orientation. Sue.

Jack stood, walked across his dark side of the room. The white of his socks glared in the space between the cuffs of his too short jeans and his Converse All-Stars.

He bent, and kissed the young girl on her lips. She giggled. Then grabbed the flashlight and gave it another twirl.
