DESERT (5-minute Freewrite)

The desert rolled under his battered truck. Rocks tossed up by wide deep treaded tires onto the rusted door. Had it been a week? Or an hour?

He shifted the truck down into third and made a wide arc around a grove of cacti. Time was fuzzy now. Perhaps it had always been that way. But now he was beginning to understand its nature.

No. That wasn't true one bit. And he knew it deep in his heart. Time was as elusive now as it had been the first day he woke.

What did it matter anyway? The last town was as dead as the dozen before it. As dead as the next several were certain to be when he arrived.

What in the hell happened to the world while he was in cryogenic sleep? Would he ever find anyone to tell him?

He shifted the truck up into fourth, gunned the gas, and pushed her up to fifth. The desert rolled under his battered truck.
