"I can't allow that," said the Shopkeeper.
"You know I'm good for it, Archibald. I come here every week," said the Shopper.
"Yes. And every week you add more to your line of credit." The Shopkeeper closed the door leading to the back office. The Shopper saw his new hat closed off from purchase and fumed.
"Archibald, this is outrageous!" The Shopper slammed his fist on the counter top. The small sale bell on the register sang. "I will be back. I will have my hat!"
The Shopper left in a huff. The door crashed behind him.
"Excuse me Miss?" Archibald, the Shopkeeper, turned to face a young woman and attend to her needs. "Bonnets are twenty-five cents. Those with lace just five cents more."
"No, sir," she said. Her soft voice just audible above the clammer on the street. "You misunderstand. How much for the gentlemen's hat?"
"He owes seventeen dollars at this establishment, ma'am," said the Shopkeeper.
"Then I'll pay it all." And she handed him a stiff twenty dollar bill. The first Archibald Krigen had seen in his life.

Good freewrite! I enjoyed it, wish I can hear more about the shopkeep. I've always liked stories, games and anime about shops like this(granted I would never work retail today...Unless the retail had adventurer gear, like in a fantasy).
Neat little story. I can't help but wonder what happens after the act of spontaneous generosity...
Does the shopper go back to his old habit of running up his bill, not learning anything and maybe being bailed out multiple more times by other people? Or does his benefactor give him a stern talking to, after which he uses that professional quality hat to get a new job and take care of his own finances, maybe eventually paying back the woman who bought him the hat?
I kind of like the ambiguity, though. It helps breathe more life into a free-write when it can be interpreted different ways, in my opinion.
