Don't Judge a Brooke... - 5 minute Freewrite

Brooke was born on the 16th September 1967 - the doctors spoke in hushed tones in the delivery room. Brooke had multiple sclerosis. Her parents, who were understandably upset at first, vowed to do everything they could to give Brooke a normal life. She had ninety per cent paralysis and had slight movement in her hands, and head. They home schooled her, and her Science-mad Father told her how everything in world around them worked. He quit his job when she was two, and he spent every waking moment with her.

Brooke's fifth birthday had come and gone, but still she had not uttered a word. Her parents wondered if everything had fallen on deaf ears all these years? They quickly cast the thought aside, and the trips to the forest, the beach, the mountains, the natural history museum continued. He wheeled her through the museum one Friday in late November, while listening to a tour guide who was holding a whiteboard and marker. The tour guide took a turn for the worst and dropped the whiteboard in Brookes lap as she struggled for breath. Her Dad performed CPR and all was fine. When he turned back to Brooke, she had the marker in her hand and had drawn on the whiteboard, with a smile as bright as one thousand suns etched across her face.

Her life changed that day through pure chance. Through the whiteboard, it soon became clear that she understood everything her Father had thought her. The whiteboard was the catalyst for huge and long lasting change in her life. She now had a voice and her gifted mind could share its brilliance with the world.

It did just that - Brooke went on to win the John Maddox Prize for Science twice by the time she was forty. Her little whiteboard never left her side and she is still the apple of her fathers eye.

For those of you not familiar with the freewrite, you basically have 5 minutes to write a story, beginning to end. Then post it to your page.

Above is my attempt to tell a story in a little over 5 minutes using the prompt "Whiteboard" The alarm went just before I finished up, so this one is more like a 6 minute freewrite!! Sorry :o)
