What kind of freedoms do I want when I quit work in August?

View this post on Hive: What kind of freedoms do I want when I quit work in August?

I've moved to Hive, along with most other people, following Justin Sun's takeover of Steem in the Spring of 2020. I believe hive is a lot more decentralised than Steem!

Sort:

I was wondering about community and social relationships. The pub is part of that, I guess, but I wondered about other interactions, either to influence the bigger systems we're stuck in, or to reciprocally help get the forest garden/off grid house moving, or just to share a beer/pass the time of day?

Im sure all of thatll just happen naturally!

Interesting. Whenever I teach small business start up, that's the bit that people struggle with. They don't realise, until it happens, how isolated they are going to feel, and how important social interaction is for their well-being.

It's not difficult to find social interaction in the eco-world of West Wales where I'll probably be moving too. There's plenty of middle class people looking for slave labour to build their eco-houses etc, although it's usually euphemistically referred to as 'volunteering'.

There are permaculture / transition type groups a-plenty here in west Wales.

Plenty to get involved in.

Cheers, good to know... I'm starting to get very restless waiting for an offer on my flat!

That's good then!

Why thankyou kindly - but now I'll have to go.buy some coffee and pastry to celebrate!

Sounds pretty anti-social to me, which is a bit surprising coming from a sociology teacher. I would have expected someone like you (left leaning) to be all in favor of seeking out others and giving to the society as much as you can, trying to find and maybe show that a different system is possible ... not to turn inwards and focus on your individual self ...

Trying to become self-suficient - isn't that the reflex of someone who is afraid of the others, of society, who is anxious that he won't be able to rely on the others or even that he might need to rely on others at moments ? Isn't that a rather mysanthropic reflex ?

Anyway, this post underscores neatly that "freedom" and "social engagement" (or "duty") are pretty much opposites ...

This is just for a while, before I get back 'out there'.

I've always been quite happy for long stretches on my own, also very much into self-reliance.

Maybe building utopia is as much about what you don't do as what you actually do?

Great list! I like it that you’re choosing down to earth things and really digging ;) into them. Excited for you 💚🌿

I absolutely understand your decision.. I got out if the hamster wheel in September... I learned so much about myself in this half year now. I think I can give the world back double...

Good to hear. I'm so looking forward to being 'released'! Not long left now....

Sure you will enjoy your retirement @revisesociology and you will have a kind of freedom!
I was a tad uncertain when I had to say goodbye to the corporate world two years ago. We converted our cottage into an airbnb to supplement the paycheck. This turned into a thriving little business, now properly registered with tourism bodies etc and we love it.
Busier now than ever but do have the freedom to do some of the things I always wanted to do.
Meditation is the very best, glad that's on your list!
Enjoy the countdown to freedom :)

Sounds like you've got it sorted. Literally no one at work thinks Im making a wrong decision!

Air b n b is on my list of possible supplements to my income!

If you enjoy people you can't go wrong, we've hosted the most awesome guests, good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Oh yeah! The notice is dropped and it is official - FREEDOM!

Keep us up to date on everything. I'll be checking in to see. I mean, I am only a few months behind ya :D

Although I think yr way ahead of me in savings - Ill still have a mortgage to pay for a few years !

Oh, I still have around $58,000 of mortgage left - that's plenty of years at the monthly rate.

This post would have fit right in with @sagescrub's freedom challenges. It's a simple list of freedoms and negative freedoms but it's not so easy to achieve these days.

I'll have to check that out thanks... just not enough time in the day to get everything done!

I love the idea of making a forest garden and doing some permaculture! I'm looking forward to swapping tips with you as we both do similar things (even if it just finding out more about it prior to actually doing it!)
