Freedom to make your own choices

We have so many choices in life that we sometimes do not know whether we are indeed making the right ones. Technology is changing rapidly and we all try to keep up with the Jones's.  Gosh, if I have to upgrade on my phone, I actually do A LOT of research before making my final choice. I look at prices for the best package and then there is the actual phone.  (My phone is like my most prized and most used possession)

I must be able to work, steemit, watch videos, take photos and read emails on my phone.   If I choose the wrong one, then I have to live with it for the next two years until my contract expires, and I might regret a wrong choice on a daily basis.  Same goes for buying a television, a car  or whatever I am buying. From a young age I have not been good at making choices.  I go into a state of panic because what if I made the wrong choice?

As the world changes, our choices change.

In earlier days we did not have so many choices and we were happy.  We were satisfied with the things we had, and I think we appreciated our belongings more.  I used to receive books as presents for my birthday.  I love books and I have my own little personal library.  I absolutely adore the smell of a book!  If I had to buy my child a book, he would most probably  not even read it. Although I tried to teach him all about the value of books, he does not appreciate books the way I do.  I still prefer reading a hard copy book over over reading on a kindle or a tablet.  Although I own both devices, and it is easier to load all my books on the tablet, I just can't appreciate books so much if I don't feel the actual pages between my fingers.

What if we all had a choice in life to do whatever we wanted?

What would you choose to do? Do you love your job so much that you would give anything to keep it? I do love my job, and I would not choose any other profession.  Being a teacher is a very fulfilling job, but writing is more fun.  I do however have enough time to write and and pursue this other passion of mine.

What if we all had enough money to survive without working?

Would you stay where you are? Would you move to some idyllic island and just live a happy life there? About three years ago, my husband and I decided to move away from the town where we lived for many years.  We both had a dream of living down at the coast, and we decided to take the chance.  It was one of the best choices that we have ever made.  We are both happy and we are both content with what we have now.  We realized that we needed to make a change early enough so that we still have time with each other to enjoy the good in life.  Everyone dreams of moving down to live in a little house at the ocean, and we are living that dream.  If you don't take chances in life, you will never know the result.

What if I told you that money isn't everything and that you do have a choice to do what you want to do with your life? People stay in dead end jobs just because they need the money.  Sure, we all need money to stay alive and for absolute survival.  But do we really need all the stuff that we have?  Do we really need a new phone every two years, do we really need the latest technology? Is it possible to scale down on your work time to spend more time with the things and people that you love?

If we die, we don't take anything with us.  Why not simplify your life without all these difficult complications? We need to make time for things that are really important.  We need to spend time with our families while we still have a chance.  Our lives can change in an instant, and if we don't make these changes in time, we might miss out on what is really important.  Are you going to keep on following the rest of the population? What will be your choice today?

Choices about such inconsequential things as a phone are just an imaginary prison, the key to unlock that prison door is a commitment to not having regret. So your choice wasnt optimal, dont regret it, either live happily or change the phone. Jealously and keeping up with the Joneses is another imaginary prison, just concentrate on being happy with what you have.

@scaletrix very true, but I have found that since I have been writing on steemit, I am actually learning a lot about myself. Possibly because we are writing anonymously, and we are more open to write about personal issues because we know that we are not judged. I do have many issues, and I am realizing more and more that these issues are sometimes self created. I am however happy with my life the way it is:) Thank you for your comment.

Hi @giantbear
I am one of those people who wish to move to the coast, but currently I don't want to leave my job (which I don't like) as I cannot see how I can do with less income. I think it is easier said than done to scale down, I have a medical aid to pay, and as you become older you need a good medical aid, I have to kids on university (and the fees don't fall), thus I am thinking to get the kids through university and then make the move. In the mean time I am thinking of a way to buy a property at the coast.

Hi @rynow property prices are very low at this stage. You should really reconsider. People are eager to sell, and if you look hard enough, you might find something that suits your price range. The property can pay off itself with rental income. People still go on holiday...My husband was lucky to get a transfer and I had to quit my job as a teacher. Fortunately I found a great online job as a teacher and I am happier than I have ever been. Will never consider going back to a brick and mortar school. Tell me about fees not falling....my son is going to university next year...IF there are still universities left....
