Never Leave Home Without It when your foraging

IMG_20170707_180847659.jpg

The Hori Hori is a Japanese farming and foraging implement, that has many use's.
With a Hori Hori on your belt you'll be ready to dig, cut ,saw, and measure.
Looking like a cross between a big knife an a small trowel with one side a serrated blade and the other side is a straight Blade. The pointed tip ideally suited to digging. Cutting through stubborn side roots is simple with the serrated blade. Down the centre of the blade are graduated markings intended for measuring seed depth for planting but you could use it as a tracking ruler or to measure whatever you want. I always carry it when I go into the woods to gather whether I'm collecting wild greens or roots and rhizomes my Hori Hori makes quick work of them.

Nice Post!
Thanks for sharing this.

No problem I like to share foraging stories.

I like using mine. I got it long ago from a gardening catalog. It's held up really well. Here, I used it for getting Elephant Garlic bulbs, Jerusalem artichokes, and Wild Carrot/Queen Anne's Lace roots for some good Fire-Roasted Wild Roots. It's a good, solid tool! Happy foraging!

I went on a trip to Japan and bought two in a japanese hardware store. That hardware store felt like Karate heaven because all the karate weapons were based on farming implements. In BC they sell them at Lee Valley. Japan has a really cool foraging culture which methinks would make a good article. I can't wait to use it to try foraging something new. While being the first herb I ever gathered when my hippie neighbour took me down the road to gather red clover and make delicious red clover tea, I never knew about the use the first nations had for that plant until I read the book "the White slaves of Maqinna". Apparently there is a tuber or rhizome to be harvested from the Red clover. I'm going to try this fall.

That's neat you got yours from a trip to Japan! I've been impressed with Steemit foragers - they are from all over the world! Korea, China, Eastern Europe, Central America. Lots of folks have never lost their traditional foraging knowledge.

I look forward to reading about your use of the red clover roots!

Japan is great for that I even bought cooked grasshoppers in a store!

Wow! It's clear that you are an adventuresome eater! That makes for a good forager, for sure! :D

It sure does help having a good tool for getting down into the soil!

All work is better with proper tools!

Very useful tool in general around the farm. I have an old school tool of similar design that is 40+ years old that gets used regularly.

If anyone wants to buy one Peaceful Valley Supply carries them.
