MY FIRST YELLOW KIWI AND OUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE

in #food7 years ago

Finally! It's about time!

This was so cool to find. I love food and I really enjoy kiwi fruit, but I've only ever eaten the traditional fuzzy green ones and the cold hardy ones before. Though I knew that a yellow variety existed, I had never found any... until the other day!

YELLOW KIWI VLOG

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE

Not only will we be eating these wonderful yellow kiwi fruit, we will be saving the seeds to plant as well. We have already been doing this with the green kiwis. Since we are right on the edge of the appropriate growing zone, it's a risk, but we might be able to pull it off.

This is one of the kiwi plants that we started from seed. To check out the process, you can see my post from last year about it. Just CLICK HERE

I also picked up a few of the cold hardy kiwi plants when I was up in Wisconisn. @Msgreenthumb had purchased them, but they were not quite right for her growing zone, so she sold them to me. For more on that story, CLICK HERE

Also, I think it is worth mentioning that although these yellow ones taste very similar to the green ones, they were far less fuzzy. That will definitely come in handy and help me save time on shaving.

HOW TO PROPERLY SHAVE A KIWI - 3 METHODS

We will see how this works out as we continue, but we are excited to try as many varieties of food bearing plants that we can grow in our area. One day, hopefully we will have an amazing food forest, but for now, we just have to keep working towards that goal! Steem on!

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

What a nice kiwi, here in South Africa we only get one kind have not seen this before, well done.

Where in South Africa are you from, just curious? 😄 😁 😆

Port Edward KZN :-)

😃 😄 😁 😆

Nice Golden Kiwi...A regular kiwi is mushier and has more juice. Gold Kiwi is bigger and has more meat or fruit. Not as juicy but sweeter Regular kiwi may have a tart taste to go with the sweet...Awesome hard work to have such great plant.

I see that you are familiar with it then! Thanks for the extra info!

I recently discovered it in Costco. It tastes delicious. Much sweeter than green one. It's called gold kiwi, I think, and origin country is New Zealand.

I think China, but they began to grow them in NZ and then "rebranded" them as "kiwi" fruit.

Nice! We live in Panama now and I wonder if we can grow kiwi here. It might not get warm or cold enough in our area. The temperature range is 58-78 every day. And it rains a lot during rainy season. I need to look into this. I don't remember seeing kiwi at the grocery store. So cool that you grew yours from seeds! We have quite a few things that we have planted from fruit we have eaten - cantaloupe, pineapple, peppers...

Yellow kiwi? No that's the first time I've heard about that. What's this appropriate gardening zone you've mentioned in this post?

COLD HARDY KIWI - Some "cold hardy" Kiwi are able to be grown as far north as Zone 3. Others are only zones 5-9.

TRADITIONAL KIWI - These seem to usually be good as far north as Zone 7, which we are on the border of.

I love all fruits! Sweet ones, sour ones and even the bitter ones, all of them. And it's been so amazing after I moved here in Vietnam 3years ago, the ammount of different fruits is phenomenal! And at least half of them I've had never seen or heard before, it's amazing! Some of them are huge like Jackfruit, or small like lychee but they are all delicious! Except one, Durian! The taste andthe smell of durian is just unbearable, can't eat that in anyway, the locals love it of course. Maybe it's one those things which you have to grow into, but Im sure I never will. One of the most delicious ones which I had never seen before is definedly Mangosteen, the taste is kind of a mix of sweet, sour and tropical, so unique and so delicious! Also Mango has been one of my favourites always, and here they have like 10 different kind of mangos, all delicious in their own way, it's a mangoheaven! I wish long life and growth to your edible forest. I have a similar dream, to make my own fruit garden some day.

never heard of yellow kiwis...good skills - its near harvest time for our pumpkins which we grew from last years seeds...kids are pumped -
