Parisian Gourmet - Day 37
As real foodies know, gourmet is not only about how you serve the food, but also about how fresh is it on the plate. The best restaurants use vegetables, fruits, and other materials that were picked on that same morning, and sometimes they even renew their inventory throughout the day.
One of the best ways to get the best, freshest groceries in Paris for your own cooking is the markets. There is, of course, the wholesale market in Rungis (that until the 1970s used to be located in Les Halles until it was transferred to its current location), but the city itself is absolutely strewn with markets that sell their customers fresh produce every single day.
While not all markets are active every day, they do operate in a range between 1 to 6 days a week, and in any given area of the city you will find at least one market every single day of the week. This is very important to people who like their produce fresh, and to Parisians, whose average refrigerator size (much like their average apartment size) is about the size of a matchbox. Yes, about that small.
So... here are some radishes from Marche d'Aligre, one of the best food markets in Paris. That's the freshness I'm sharing with you today.
