Halo Halo - A Favorite Filipino Dessert
Hey guys! Ever had Halo-halo? You know the sweet dessert topped with shaved ice.
Main ingredients are shaved ice and evaporated milk. It is usually served in a tall cup or the less common, in a bowl.
There are other ingredients also added and they can vary in preference. People can add kidney beans, coconut, sago, jackfruit, nata de coco. You can even add durian if you really wanted to. The list goes on, you can pretty much add anything that you like. Love candy? Why not add it too? It's called halo-halo for a reason, which literally means, mix mix in Tagalog. So mix mix. Mix everything.
For the first timers and inexperienced, you might try to eat is straightaway.

To have the very best experience, you have to mix mix first. Make sure those shaved ice on top and other ingredients are incorporated well together. How to do this? Mix it all together right?
YES!
That is correct, but not the way you think. To mix, you would normally grab the spoon and go in circles.
NO!
That is wrong. Imagine doing that to the hardened shaved ice on top. It will spill and go all over the place.
HOW THEN??
What you do is grab the straw or spoon or whatever they gave you and instead of going circles, go down and up. This way you can get the bottom ingredients go up to the top. Do this on one side, then move to the next side, keep doing the same thing until it's all well incorporated.
OK, WHAT???
If you are scratching your head, how about a video of me in action? I didn't buy halo-halo but this is Vietnamese's version called the three color beans dessert or Che Ba Mau. Time stamp doesn't seem to be working, but skip to 2:21 for the action.
