ESPN Investigation Finds Widespread Food Safety Violations At Stadiums
The concession stands at stadiums around the U.S. help to bring in billions of dollars every year, they sell everything from burgers and hot dogs, to popcorn, beer, pretzels, nachos, and more.
Recently, ESPN Outside The Lines analysis looked at roughly 16,000 food safety inspection reports on these stadiums around the country and they discovered that for about 28 percent of the venues, at least half of them had food service outlet issues.
In the investigation they found reports detailing a myriad of violations:
expired food, dirty venues, equipment problems, employees sweating over food and failing to wash their hands properly, fruit flies, mouse droppings in food-prep trays, droppings in a bin of rice, and more. This also isn't the first time that investigations have found food violations at stadiums in the U.S..
The top 3 venues for the highest number of violations were:
- Spectrum Center in Charlotte, NC
- Palace of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hills, MI
- American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX
It's suggested that the results might improve if stadiums were given enough warning before the inspection takes place, but isn't that just giving an unrealistic view of things to the inspector? If you really want to know how things are running on a usual basis, wouldn't it make more sense to show up unexpectedly? Regardless, they expect that in the future stadiums might get more notice and that this could help to ease the inspection results.
The government frequently cracks down on peaceful people who are trying to earn a living by cooking some food product at their home and selling it, urging caution that if we risked eating such food that hadn't undergone strict oversight that it could be the death of us. You might assume that you'd have much better luck getting quality food from a location such as a concession venue in a prominent sports stadium, with all of its permits and licenses lining the wall, but it turns out that likely wouldn't be the result that you'd get.
