California Crackdown On Coffee
A Judge in California recently ruled that coffee companies will need to start advertising a warning to customers that there are possible cancer concerns related to their purchase.
However, there are many within the scientific community who insist that there isn’t anything to worry about. And not everyone believes that by drinking coffee, it’s going to promote an increased risk of cancer; because of the controversial acrylamide ingredient.
Critics suggest that in order to reach carcinogenic levels, that someone would need to drink hundreds of cups of coffee in a single day; to pose any threat.
There are a variety of studies that suggest the contrary, that there are health benefits that can be reaped from consuming coffee.
It’s Not Just Coffee…
The new changes don’t apply to everyone. In other words, it isn’t every coffee company that will need to comply with the new rules and advertise the cancer warnings in the state of California. It’s only directed at those coffee companies with 10 employees or more. Because if there are 9 employees, there apparently won’t be the same cancer concerns.
For those companies with more than 10+ employees, they are going to need to provide clear warnings that don’t intentionally expose anyone unwillingly to this chemical. For those who fail to do so, they could face a fine of $2,500 or more per person.
Is this decision likely to impact many coffee drinkers, to the point that Starbucks and other coffee companies should be worried?
The new ruling came as a result from a lawsuit that was launched almost a decade ago. That lawsuit had specifically named Starbucks, Costco, and a variety of other coffee businesses. And in that ruling, the judge said that those coffee companies had failed to prove that the chemical didn’t pose any health risk or cancer threat.
The law group who was representing the non-profit that launched the coffee lawsuit, has been in lawsuits against restaurants like Burger King and McDonald’s, as well as chip companies like Frito-Lay and Kettle Foods, for the same thing; forcing them to put labels on their food products and pay penalties to the state because of concerns over that chemical.
After all, this chemical is found in many different food products. So there is clearly a lot of money for them to make.
What business or food product might they go after next?
And thus far, they’ve refused to accept the defendants arguments in trying to determine the level of risk that might be associated with exposure to the acrylamide chemical.
The refusal works out well for them, because they’re going to be profiting from the settlements when those businesses are required to pay fines to the state. Safety and health, or money? Even the American Council on Science and Health has responded to the news, insinuating that the lawsuits might just be a simple attempt to make a lot of money.
The firm behind the fight insists that they're only concerned that this chemical is in much of the food that we eat, and it's because they care so much that they're motivated to pursue these legal battles.

In my house we are regular consumers of coffee, especially in the winter, I do not think that the fact that their consumption is harmful to health, lower the demand for coffee, it also sounds ridiculous that only companies that have more than 10 employees they should announce the existence of carcinogenic substance, the truth sounds ridiculous.

Just unreal. I actually heard this early today a new program. After spending so much time in healthy asia, family oriented latin America...I go back to the western world and it's like the culture of death.....I don't get it. Hate to be so dramatic, but through the eyes of perpetual traveler of over 11 years I see how things are around the world. If I had to stay in once country it would probably be thailand. Healthy, great food, low crime, nice people, and you don't have to worry about all the disease and poison. Just insane, a cup of coffee now causes cancer back in my home country.....to the point it needs to be labeled! Very upsetting for me. Maybe the GMO mosquitos give anti-cancer bites.....but I doubt that! lol

This sounds like a knee jerk reaction that will make lots of money wort case. The only encouraging part is that small businesses (10 or less) don't have to comply which doesn't make any medical sense .....they are just not worth it money-wise to go after.
Interesting that they start with coffee and there is no end to where they can expand this enterprise to, knowing how we cook/roast every thing we consume.

Obviously just another ploy to fill the coffers. If the concern was health, we wouldn't have our food soaked in Glyphosate and our water poisoned with fluoride.
Word on the street is that in 2019, the coffee enema is going to be the coolest new way to commit suicide (will only work in california though, hmm).
Is this about control or true concern of our health? I would be wary. I believe in moderation it will not harm you. And finally when we clock out is not controlled by us, that is up to our creator. Just seen the terrifying data on glyphosate — it's everywhere, thanks to Monsanto! I really doubt coffee itself would have more detrimental effects on human health than glyphosate.
Heh. I heard about this on the radio news the other day, and I thought to myself, "someone's trying to get rich."
I reckon the best defense is a good offense, and it would be relatively easy for coffee manufacturers to show reams of research that has long established the health benefits of coffee.
That would be a better tactic than trying to wrangle over whether one of the ingredients wasn't as good for you as all of them together, since we don't just take the one, we take the whole together, and the whole is clearly beneficial.
