First harvest from the garden, and a Rhubarb crumble to boot!

in #food6 years ago

Well, this is the first harvest from the garden, you may be thinking really? It’s April and this is the first thing you have gotten… Well, I literally had nothing planted in overwinter other than the fruit tree, fruit bushes and the rhubarb.

I put up a picture of the rhubarb back in March as it was starting to come through.

And since then it has literally exploded, this is the biggest I have ever seen it and its on it 5th year in this spot.

We noticed some bits had fallen down and broken at the base so instead of letting them go to waste it was an easy decision to cut them loose and bring them inside to the kitchen.

My amazing little helper(4) thought this was spectacular as they are perfect for chasing people around and wafting them with the huge leaves.

What to do with them

Well it would have to be none other than rhubarb crumble, Yey!

This takes 20 minutes is to make and about 5 minutes to devour, we didn't really follow a recipe and it ended up over cooked and the crumble was, well not very crumbly but we had such a laugh making it together. Two things i truly enjoy doing with my daughter are showing her how to garden and teaching her about greenhouse and vegetable patch as well as cooking allsorts of food with her.

I really hope she continues to show an interest in this as she is such a smart and independent 4 year old id love to see this develop as she continues through life.

It really is simple to make cut the rhubarb up stew it with some sugar then add the crumble and cook, the crumble is just self raising flour or a suitable alternative with butter rubbed in to make the crumbs, we used an olive spread instead of butter.

The crumble was a bit of a disaster as I think I made the rhubarb to wet and this turned the crumble very stodgy and dense where the flour absorbed the water, however we did add some cinnamon to this and it tasted amazing so i will be doing that again next time and hopefully making the crumble better to!

Unfortinatly i didnt get a picture of it once it had been in the oven for 30 minutes cooking as we were all to excited to eat it!! so

Proof is in the pudding, it's no award winning dessert, its not healthy but it's a great treat after a long day working in the garden.. Aaargh i can't wait to start harvesting more things from the garden and it won't be long either

Until next time

All the best

Dan
