Good morning my healthy foodie friends!

Just returned from Colorado visiting with family and definitely ready for a rest! Between cooking, baking and baby snuggles It was quite a trip! I had just visited in December but my grandson was having surgery and my daughter wanted me there.

An extra set of arms would be needed.

After a few tense hours surgery was over. So tough seeing the little guy like that but I am amazed how quickly babies rebound! By the time I left 5 days later he was smiling and laughing like a true champ! Such a blessing.

Time flies! He’s 8 months old now he is very eager to eat adult food so we thought what better time to begin introducing fruits and veggies! Like most moms we all try to feed our babies in a healthy way. If you’re like me, when my kids were small I was a working mom too! I just purchased the popular baby food in jars at the local market!

It never occurred to me that I could easily make my own and it would be healthier for the baby!

I didn’t realize that the preservation process requires heating the foods to such a high temperature that the vitamin, nutrient and flavor levels are reduced significantly! Fillers are also added to cut costs for the manufacturer!

Not what we want for this little guy!

All you need: Fresh fruits and veggies, a pan to steam the veggies, a blender and ice cube trays!

Butternut Squash, Sweet Potatoes, Beets, Carrots, Apple, Avocado, Kale and Spinach were the fruits and vegetables of choice! We washed and peeled everything and started steaming!

Butternut Squash is up first!

  • One by one as the vegetables were tender we tossed them in our blender to puree! Carrots now!

So tasty! Beautiful squash!

…. and then spooned everything into ice cube trays!

  • Isn’t it beautiful! This will be enough food for a month or so. And the best part, we’re working with fresh organic vegetables, no fillers or unnecessary preservatives! Needless to say, someone is excited!

Lids on the trays and into the freezer. Just before dinner, just pop out a cube, let it thaw!

Finally, It's time for dinner!

He loved it, so happy to eat! Prep time from start to finish was a couple of hours. This is inexpensive to make, great to have on hand for mom! Don’t need to worry about running to the market for baby food!

Such a great end to a stressful trip! Baby is recovering, mom and dad are still trying to get some rest, and I am happily resting at the Bird nest!

Thanks for stopping in!
And as always, blessings to you all!

I'm really glad your grandbaby is recovering and back on his feed. That's a good thing.

What a nice way to 'do' babyfood. My mother used 'store bought' not as much for convenience but because she was convinced it was the best choice for nutrition. She did use cloth diapers and completely wore out at least three washing machines getting us all going.

Course, my mom's 'adult food' was pretty good. She used very little prepared food and made everything fresh including bread and butter.

Thanks for a great 'hint' for the little ones. A good start is a good thing.

You are so kind @bigtom13! It was a relief to leave the little guy on the mend. Not fun seeing such a joyous little human so sad and confused. It sounds like your mom was a rockstar! Cloth diapers, yikes! I have to say I don't know what my mom did.....now that I think about it. She was so busy with working and all of the kids it was all she could do to feed us! lol Parenting is tough that is for sure. I am constantly amazed, new ideas, innovation "schools of though" about nutrition and child rearing every day. Fun stuff.

Nothing like homemade baby food, those bottles of mass produced baby food tastes so awful too, no wonder babies pull such faces at the veggies! Your homecooked baby veggies look delicious granny Bird! I still make baby food veggies from time to time, we just love it, butternut & potato mash especially ;) So glad the little one is better!

It must have been a relief to see your Grandbaby doing better and having a good supply of food prepared and ready for him :)
