Whole Grain vs Whole Wheat
We see both of these terms slapped on packages of baked goods like bread for example. However, one is not like the other!
I think it's good that folks know the difference, because one is superior.
Like I said these are things you see on packages all the time, and I know that before I knew the difference I kind of assumed that whole wheat was pretty much the best choice in terms of choosing a healthier option to avoid highly refined and bleached bread that has been basically stripped of it's nutrients.
Lets keep it simple and break it down;
Whole Wheat
What we have here is the bran, the germ, and the endosperm of the wheat kernel intact, they have not been processed to the point where these parts have been stripped away. The parts of the grain include starch, oils, and protein. Keep in mind Wheat is just one type of grain, so this bread has one whole grain, which is still better than none!
Whole Grain
Like whole wheat, whole grain bread can consist of a number of different grains that have been left intact. These grains may include Wheat, Spelt, Oats, Corn, Hulled or pot barley, Quinoa, Millet, Whole grain rye, Brown rice, & Buckwheat to name a few. If you see whole grain that's awesome because it should be an indication that the bread contains multiple whole grains. Double check and read the label to see which grains are included. Multiple grains means potentially more fiber, vitamins, and minerals. A much more efficient way to eat!
Now you know, keep this in mind next time you're at the supermarket.
Until next time..
