Do you know the story of the savage?

Hello, dear readers

On previous occasions, we have spoken about legends and famous mystery stories of Venezuelan folklore. On this occasion I would love to tell you stories that are not so well known, but that people or families tell on darker nights or full moon nights.

Everyone knows that at this moment, Venezuela has a serious electricity problem, so people have chosen to sit on the porches of houses or on cement sidewalks when power is cut off. They usually get together to talk about the day to day activities, about the crisis, but also to tell some stories that make the moment more bearable. Between invented and real stories, people tell their strangest stories, leaving more than one listener frozen, stiff and immobile, with fear in their bones.

One of the strangest stories I have ever heard is that of the famous Savage. I have heard and read many stories about this character, but never like the one I will tell you next. Once, a friend from the university had to travel to a remote part of the city. In this town called Las Peonías there was no electricity or asphalt roads, so people moved from one place to another on mules and donkeys. This scientific friend had gone to that town to perform a study on a species of bat.

One of the things my friend did was go out every night to find bats and go into caves and dense forests. On the last day of research, he went to one of the most famous bat caves. There, in the middle of the darkness, illuminated by a simple mechurrio (handmade lamp), he heard a cry in the distance. At first he thought it was an animal, then he thought it was a child. The crying was like a howl, but short, elongated, almost groaning. His skin was immediately bristly when he realized the hour and the darkness. At that moment he realized that he was alone and that the cry was heard closer and closer, so he decided to leave the collection of samples for the next day

When he was close to the mule, he saw it make a whinny and trotted out leaving it standing in the middle of nowhere. With the mechurrio in his hand, he saw how a darker shadow stretched out next to his shadow. Although he was a man of science and should not believe in trickery, he resigned himself and ran out of there without looking back. As he was on the road he saw a shadow almost on his heels behind him. He made haste and tried to keep his eyes to the front.

When he arrived in town, he told every body what had happened. Everyone was glad that he had left that cave quickly and they invited him to check it the next morning. At first he had his doubts, but he remembered that he had to collect his samples, so he accepted the proposal. The next day they returned to the cave and were even more surprised.

As they entered the cave they found thousands of dead and dried bats on the floor. There were also large human footprints, but because of their shape, they were believed to be coming out of the cave. Seeing this, those who had accompanied him told him to leave the cave as soon as possible and so they did. When they finally reached the village, after a long and strange silence, the people told him that those tracks were from the Savage. The Savage is a spectre that licks people's feet while they sleep, and sucks their blood and doesn't let go until it tears them to their soul, they told him in an enigmatic and frightening tone. My friend, who has always been a little incredulous, pointed out to them that there was no problem because the footprints indicated that that shadow had come out of the cave. The people looked at each other and then one of them dared to tell him short, as if afraid to awaken someone's fury:

-Make no mistake, my friend. The Savage has his feet turned: the front has it back and the back forward. Which means you think he came out, but he really came in and was there, inside, waiting for you. Take care, because maybe I even stole something from your shadow.

My friend was grateful that this day was the last day in Las Peonías and that he would never have to return to that cave again. However, after that event, he feels that some nights, while he sleeps and one of his feet is left uncovered with the blanket, that someone sits on his bed and licks his foot. Immediately it covers his whole body but he knows that if he opens his eyes, he will see a long dark shadow reaching up to the ceiling. He feels that the Savage is still chasing him.

Caves lend themselves to many kinds of stories, legends and speculations. Of the famous "Cave of El Guácharo" (Caripe, Venezuela), for example, there are several. When I started reading your text I thought you were going to talk about the case of the supposed cannibal discovered a few years ago, which is also a horror story, although real. Thank you for offering us this story, @nancybriti.

That's right. I had forgotten that story! I think that later on I will be able to work with those real stories that have shaken the country. Thank you for reminding me of that event, @josemalavem and for commenting.
