Chunky VS slim flashdrives.

in #flashdrive5 years ago

Out of nowhere, I decided to test some of the flash-drives that I had lying around and see how fast they were. Lets get this done quick! All tests were done with direct USB 3.0 port (No hub). 1GB of test data was used as test data and were done 3 times to average. Software used : CrystalDiskMark 6.0.2

  1. Kingston Data Traveler 3.0 swivl 128GB (Chunky)

This is the best value flash-drive for it's price. It averages at about 100MB/s for day to day use.

Build : Glossy Plastic with a swiveling shiny metal cover for the connector.

Test results :

Sequential Read (Q= 32,T= 1) : 96.341 MB/s
Sequential Write (Q= 32,T= 1) : 13.318 MB/s
Random Read 4KiB (Q= 8,T= 8) : 6.528 MB/s [ 1593.8 IOPS]
Random Write 4KiB (Q= 8,T= 8) : 0.489 MB/s [ 119.4 IOPS]
Random Read 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 6.514 MB/s [ 1590.3 IOPS]
Random Write 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 0.488 MB/s [ 119.1 IOPS]
Random Read 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 6.164 MB/s [ 1504.9 IOPS]
Random Write 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 0.461 MB/s [ 112.5 IOPS]
  1. Sandisk Ultra 64GB (Chunky)

This is a durable flash drive in terms of lifespan, but in terms of build quality, not really the key-chain hole of mine broke. It also has great speed of over 100MB/s and available in higher capacities.

Build : Partially mat and glossy with a pop in and out mechanism.

Test results :

Sequential Read (Q= 32,T= 1) : 102.384 MB/s
Sequential Write (Q= 32,T= 1) : 26.030 MB/s
Random Read 4KiB (Q= 8,T= 8) : 7.948 MB/s [ 1940.4 IOPS]
Random Write 4KiB (Q= 8,T= 8) : 0.000 MB/s [ 0.0 IOPS]
Random Read 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 7.974 MB/s [ 1946.8 IOPS]
Random Write 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 0.000 MB/s [ 0.0 IOPS]
Random Read 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 7.486 MB/s [ 1827.6 IOPS]
Random Write 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 0.000 MB/s [ 0.0 IOPS]

On to the slim ones. before that, let me say that, not all slin flash-drives are same, some might actually have simillar performance as their chunky counterparts. I am testing only 1 brand, cause its the only thing I have and I'm bored as hell so lets go!

  1. I have no clue what this says here is a picture I took, I can't find it anywhere online.

Its not cheap for its looks mostly. Its ideal for small documents, booting small linux live OS and things alike.

Build : Freaking gorgeous😍.

Test results :

Sequential Read (Q= 32,T= 1) : 22.650 MB/s
Sequential Write (Q= 32,T= 1) : 13.839 MB/s
Random Read 4KiB (Q= 8,T= 8) : 5.807 MB/s [ 1417.7 IOPS]
Random Write 4KiB (Q= 8,T= 8) : 0.002 MB/s [ 0.5 IOPS]
Random Read 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 5.643 MB/s [ 1377.7 IOPS]
Random Write 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 0.001 MB/s [ 0.2 IOPS]
Random Read 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 5.245 MB/s [ 1280.5 IOPS]
Random Write 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 0.004 MB/s [ 1.0 IOPS]

Bottom line:

Chunky and big flash-drive = more speed and stamina that is it can be at high speed for longer. Does not feel "modern".

Slim flash-drive = more portability and nice looks. Good for documents, small files and convenience.
