Five Nuggets from Uncle Faust (Episode 7)

Five nuggets is a series inspired by an accidental collision with a similar project by Tim Ferris, author of The 4 Hour Work Week and Tools for Titans. In this weekly series, I share five things which caught my interest this week through my wanderings, web surfing, researching and time spent on Steemit.

Without further ado, five nuggets which caught my attention this week:

The Congo Dandies (la Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes): Living in Poverty and Spending a Fortune to Look Like a Million Dollars

Anyone who has followed me for some time knows my interest in subcultures of society. Humans in the present era are not so much unified city-states as stratified tribes in loose confederations no longer constrained by geographic limitations. I was absolutely taken aback when I came across the subculture of the Congo Dandies.

After the Second World War, Congolese servicemen returned to their country loaded to the gills with the latest fashions from France. Every Sunday they would meet to peacock and show off their best fashions. This is how la Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes (the Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People) was formed and continues to survive in the current era.

Refreshing to see it’s not just the US with seriously displaced priorities.

This is one of the absolute best campaign commercials I’ve seen in recent history. I love satire, and Joseph - you have earned my vote (no offense @timcliff). Vote for “Rocket Man” witness @joseph.

In the immortal words of Maximus in the movie Gladiator, “are you not entertained?”

Everything and Nothing: The Amazing Science of Empty Space (Documentary Film)

Earlier this week while crushing through an audit, I was looking for something to play in the background, similar to the buzz in a coffee shop (which creates process disfluency – something I covered in an earlier piece about coffee shops powering innovation). I stumbled across Everything and Nothing in my Amazon Prime account quite by accident and I was immediately hooked.

This is one of the most amazing documentaries. It shows how observing a supernova in 1572, which created a new star in the sky so bright it shone in the daytime sky, humanity began to rethink long-held assumptions about the universe. It eventually led to the discovery of General Relativity and took us into the strange world of Quantum Physics.

This is by far one of the most impressive documentary films spanning science, mathematics, and philosophy explaining how humanity’s understanding of the universe evolved over the centuries.

Five Equations that Changed the World: The Power and Poetry of Mathematics

Years back as I was in University studying Engineering, I can recall how once I discovered Calculus mathematics absolutely captivated me. One evening I was at the local bookstore when I stumbled across this book.

Five Equations that Changed the World has to be one of the absolute best books written for individuals with no background in mathematics to understand how groundbreaking these equations were to humanity. It covers Sir Isaac Newton’s Law of Gravitation, how Daniel Bernoulli’s Law of Hydrodynamic Pressure led to the discovery of flight, and three others.

Needless to say, this book is part of my personal library.

Deaf People Teach Us Bad Words

I find humor in the offensive, for which I am unapologetic. There are times in life, where verbal expression does not sufficiently covey emphasis like offensive sign language. In this video, we have the opportunity to expand our ability to convey this by learning bad words in American Sign Language.

Enjoy.

That concludes my #fivenuggets for this week’s episode. Take care my Steemitland friends and until next time…

@cityslicker thaks for stopping by each week to check out my #fivenuggets. I appreciate it.

As I'm looking over all the different episodes I've done to date, I am surprised how many unique things I come across on a weekly basis. In some ways doing this regular series, I seem to recognize and appreciate it more.

Those Congo Dandies must have severe mental issues to prioratize how they look before what they actually need...

@droucil can't say I disagree with you on that point.

The part which absolutely shocked (and disgusted) me was the point when one of the dandies pulled a pair of shoes out and commented that it took him two years to save for those shoes. He goes on to mention he could have purchased some land for the cost of those shoes, but he had to have his shoes.

Subcultures as a whole are never very logical. I don't necessarily agree with many I write about, but I do find it fascinating how far humans will go to find or create a tribe to fit in.
