We recently went on vacation to the beach in Florida.
And, much to my dismay, I became “that” guy…
The guy who “has to wear” a sun shirt.
As you may or may not know, I’ve often written about not being the guy who has to wear a sun shirt at the beach or pool, to hide his stomach fat and man bewbs.
Now if you don’t know what a sun shirt is, it’s (usually) a long sleeve shirt that has some kind of SPF protection so you don’t have to bathe in sunscreen every 90 minutes or so.
How’d I end up wearing a sun shirt?
Even though I had SPF 30 on, I got a WICKED burn the first day we were out on the beach.
As a result, I had to swallow my pride and cover up.
The only saving grace was while my son and I were in the ocean together, he said,
“Dad, you look like the Incredible Hulk! That shirt is sticking to your six-pack!”
😂😂😂
Now I don’t share any of this to brag, but rather for 2 simple reasons:
1- If a guy like me, with my injury and insomnia history, can get in this kind of shape at 51, anyone with a little “stick-to-it-ness” can too.
And more importantly…
2- I’m demonstrating to my children, especially my son, that men can and should be lean, healthy and strong.
Unfortunately, we now live in a society that focuses on being “body positive” and showing “body acceptance.”
And it’s supposedly “acceptable” to be 400 pounds and still love yourself.
(I suggest that the very reason someone is 400 pounds is because deep inside they do NOT love themselves and that’s his/her way of hiding and keeping people away… But we’ll save that for another time…)
Now, I’m not for shaming someone because of the way they look - that’s mean and unloving - so DON’T DO IT!
But the fact that you - not “you” - the “global” you - might feel shame and even embarrassment about the way you look is because, deep inside, you know you should do -
And more importantly -
CAN do better.
You probably just don’t “know how” to at this particular moment.
For many, the shame and embarrassment come from not living up to your own expectations, disappointing yourself, and giving yourself a pass.
And deep inside you know you’re out of integrity with yourself… which is why it feels so bad when you think about it…
Regardless of what the rest of the world says and tries to get you to agree with them about.
So you try not to think about it…
And for a lot of guys, that’s where the “self-medication” of alcohol, social media, and excessive TV watching enter in.
They temporarily soothe the pain… Kick it down the road…
The problem is, the pain always resurfaces.
And the “can” always needs to be “re-kicked.”
So my suggestion?
JUST.
GET.
STARTED.
And then, once you get started?
DON’T.
STOP.
EVER.
Start with the easiest, most no-brainer program you can find.
