Gold (Film): Review.

in #film6 years ago

There was a time when I did not give a penny for Matthew McConaughey, because although I had liked some of his works, in general, the films in which he appeared were very flat and lacking depth, and although his performances were not bad, his characters were archetypal, however, at the beginning of this decade McConaughey made an evolution, I do not know if it was before or after winning the Oscar, but his characters and the films in which he appeared began to improve, so when it was released, I decided to put Gold in my list, now that I've finally seen it, I've decided to talk about it.

Year: 2016
Category: Drama, Crime.
Director: Stephen Gaghan.
Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Édgar Ramírez, Bryce Dallas Howard, Corey Stoll, Toby Kebbell, Craig T. Nelson, Bruce Greenwood.

Plot

Kenny Wells decides to take a trip to Indonesia, where he will try to convince a geologist to help him find gold, with the aim of saving his company that is about to go bankrupt.

Opinion

Kenny Wells helps his father to run a prospecting company, Washoe, a business in which his family has been involved for several generations, however, his father dies, and seven years later the company is in a precarious state, Kenny has had to move the company's office to a bar where his girlfriend Kay works, in addition, he has been forced by his precarious economic situation to live in her house. Broke economically, and without any viable solution, Kenny has the idea of traveling to Indonesia to meet Michael Acosta, a geologist who thinks he has found gold in a part of that country, but which nobody finances because many experts say he is wrong, however, Kenny decides to make a deal with him, Michael will tell him where to dig and will direct the project and in return Kenny will get the funds to finance it.

The film has a good pace, it's basically a well-formulated drama, the direction work by Stephen Gaghan, who I did not know until I saw this movie, it's very good, however, I feel that at a certain moment of the film, especially in the final part, there is an absence of something, something that I can not describe, a magic that it should have but of which it lacks. The script is good, possibly the biggest problem is that it only deepens in the evolution that the main character does, neglecting the rest of the characters a lot.

The performances are good, the work done by Matthew McConaughey is phenomenal, he really is a great dramatic actor, I do not understand how he wasted part of his career making romantic comedies, his character in this movie reminded me of the one played by Christian Bale in American Hustle, and not because the personalities of the characters are the same, although they have something in common, but because of their physical characteristics, both with a bald spot on the upper head along with abundant hair on the sides and a pronounced belly. On the other hand, the performance of Edgar Ramirez is good, however, his character ends up having a little mystery, but I do not know if that is because it was designed to be that way or because the writers did not go deep into it. Bryce Dallas Howard, who plays the protagonist's girlfriend, and who is practically the only female character of importance in the film, makes a formidable performance.

The film is entertaining, especially considering that it is a drama, and in this type of genre the story tends to develop a bit slow. Also, the fact that the film was based on real events I suppose that adds a plus, for it shows other of those cases in which the American dream is perverted to a certain point in which everything is corrupted.
