One More Wave

In anticipation, the young man packed his car with his surfboard and wetsuit and set off to the beach. He had finished all his homework and chores. He had checked the forecasts and it looked like everything was coming together to create a magical evening of surfing.

The youngster had to go to school that day and it was now 5:30pm when he set off for the beach. It would be dark by 7:00 and it took him half an hour to get to his destination from home. This left him with only an hour to go surfing. "That is not enough time", he thought to himself.

He arrived at the beach and in a hurried fashion popped on his wetsuit and sprinted towards the ocean with his board under his arm. The waves were massive. The biggest and best shape he had seen all year. With vigor he paddled out beyond the break and waited for his first wave. He noticed the beauty of the already setting sun but it was a reminder of the limited time he had to surf before it would be pitch black out.

After a few minutes wait and bustling for a position among the other surfers he caught his first wave and was off down the line of the beach. That familiar feel of the power of the ocean beneath his feet made the adrenaline start flowing throughout his body. He was racing down the face of the wave and could see a large close out section coming up in front of him. The young surfer launched off the face of the wave and flew in to the air as if he was weightless.

He paddled back to where the waves were breaking and caught wave after wave. It was getting darker and darker and the other surfers were beginning to get out of the water and return home. Soon only three surfers remained and the sun had already dipped below the horizon. It was now easy to catch waves because there were more waves breaking than surfers in the ocean. The other two surfers caught waves and the young surfer could no longer see them. Finally, the young surfer caught a long wave which came to end a ways down the beach.

By now the other two surfers had left the water and he was all alone in the vast darkness. He remembered the words of his father "Make sure to get out before dark". The surfer furiously paddled back up the beach and his arms were burning. He thought to himself "One more wave". And so he flew down the beach one more time in total darkness unable to see where he was going but relying solely on his sense of feel to guide himself along the wave.
