She watched them sitting together

He watched her as she ordered a salad and sparkling water from the waiter. The waiter was trapped in her eyes also, it seemed no one could escape.

Since he didn't have to look into those eyes, he could observe her more casually, more like he would a normal person. Her voice was much like the way she walked, there was no extra movement, everything was efficient and built for effectiveness yet, it glided along like hot honey off a spoon.

As she spoke to the waiter, her posture was straight like an ex-dancer who was yet to forget her training, the kind that never do. Dressed in a pencil skirt and white blouse, she looked like the perfect assistant, hired largely on her looks but, he could see that it was a facade and there was a subtext below. With all the years spent watching, analysing and mentally tearing people apart to see what makes them tick, he had never come across anything like her. He couldn't place it but, there was power there.

She stood and walked out of the café

She now turned her attention to him and looked him up and down without breaking eye contact. A trained peripheral vision is an advantage and she knew that while she held his attention, he would be largely frozen. This will pass, soon enough.

He was unremarkable in his attire, the grey suit wore him just as much as he wore it and it was close to being time to give it away to charity. He was handsome in an average way but his body was in condition, there was no extra anywhere. In a bespoke suit he would draw attention.

It wouldn't be his body that would draw them in as much as the silver hair, smooth skin and the dark brown eyes that looked like bear caves in stone. Around forty years of age, maybe a little younger. There was something about him that was ageless.

She looked into his eyes.

"Think of your parents. Think of your friends. Think of that pretty girl you talked to last week.

She released him from the gaze by looking out of the window into the street at a bus pulled up at the stop. She felt him sigh in relief but knew that soon her spell would be broken, what he knew of her would be burned from his mind and replaced by something altogether different. She looked back at him.

"Thank you for meeting me after work. I wasn't sure if I should ask but time is running short and I am hoping you will help me."

"Umm, well no problem but I am unsure how I can help if I don't know what it is."

He looked at her and it was the first time he saw indecision in her body language, the slightest hesitation as she drew in a breath that bordered on a sigh as if she was questioning whether to divulge her darkest secrets. It was the first time he felt that he could step in and save her, that the cage was gone.

"You can tell me, it all stays between us."

She smiled at his words and then broke into a laugh. He had never heard her laugh before and the sound reminded him of tiny frozen church bells, clear and musical.

"I know, you wouldn't be here otherwise."

He looked confused.

"We have things to do."

"What things?"

Just as he finished the question, her eyes lit up, orange with flames which were then engulfed by an intense blue flame. He watched her as time seemed to freeze and the movement of every muscle in her face registered in his mind. His head turned to the side and he saw other customers frozen, oblivious of what was to come. How did he know?

He looked back and her eyes now burned large with her skin pale and translucent like fine bone china glowing slightly beneath. His hand reached for the table edge and ripped it to the side as in the same motion he lunged forward and launched his body into hers hard, the sound of shattering glass behind him, a wave of heat on his back.

She looked at them on the ground

The wings unfurled to expose him, still holding her close, looking into her eyes. Gone was the facade, gone was the illusion, gone was the cage. Soon had come, he now saw her. She was smiling.

"You will do nicely."
