LOVE LIKE HIS - Chapter 28 – THE BRIDGE

Cromwell is tailing Gary, but not from as far as he normally would. The way he figures it, Gary saw his car anyway, plus, there is no way that he’s willing to risk losing him. No, he’ll finish this with Mr. Swier today, and not let him out of his sight until he’s behind bars.

From Cromwell’s point of view, Gary is the exact opposite of himself. This is certainly true in reality, just not in the manner that the detective sees it. As far as he is concerned, the man that he is following is the epitome of all that is perverted, wicked, and corrupt... and Cromwell is just the hero to swoop in and take care of that.

Since Ray has already fled elsewhere, Cromwell’s entire life hangs on tracking Gary and cracking this case.

Of course, he’d settle for cracking a skull.

Always on the lookout for the fuzz now, Cromwell is constantly shifting his focus from the car in front of him to the rear-view mirror, and quite frankly, that fact disgusts him. Stupid Kyle. That Bible verse search engine was a disaster, and had only backfired so far. In all his years on the job, Cromwell can’t remember a single time he’d ever woken up with an empty clip and no recollection. No, if anyone was to blame for this predicament, it’s that so-called “man upstairs.”

The detective never asked to be assaulted with Bible verses while he was out drinking. He had enough on his mind, and still does. All he can recall from last night is a repetition of events: Bible verse, drink, Bible verse drink... The next thing he knew he at home, lying on his floor. Reports of the gunfire had been called in, but Cromwell has no idea who the target was. Now, the cops were probably searching for him because of it. Since it had been early Sunday morning, perhaps they hadn't pulled his prints off of the shell casings yet. Either way, he’d have to figure out a way out of this, and the suspect in front of him was the best candidate for creating an excuse that would leave Cromwell a hero, not to mention not guilty of any potential charges.

He refocuses his attention back to his target once again.

“This fool is heading towards the river!” the detective shouts to himself.

If Gary crosses the bridge, there is no turning back. Heck, there might not even be any coming back for him. Cromwell smiles. Whatever Mr. Swier is thinking, this move may be his last.

The only real destination down this way is an island out in the middle of the river. Unless Ray is already waiting there, Cromwell should have the upper hand. As an added bonus, this is about the least likely place that the cops would be searching if they are looking for the detective. It is remote and desolate, and Cromwell couldn’t be happier. He lifts his foot slightly and begins to decelerate. At last, this disaster will come to an end, and Gary will finally have to pay for what he did to his wife.

Cromwell loves a happy ending.

Gary’s car crosses the bridge and turns right. Cromwell parks his car cockeyed at the end of the bridge. The bridge is wide enough that Gary could still drive out, but the detective is not about to let that happen. The angled parking job is meant more as a show of alpha-male dominance anyway and less as a practical roadblock or barricade. Just like in the interrogation room, Cromwell is now in charge, and he knows it. As he exists his vehicle, he pulls his piece out and flicks the safety off one last time.

From farther across the bridge Cromwell hears a car door close. Gary is on foot now too. Unless he plans on drowning himself or camping for the night, he’ll be coming this way shortly.

The cage door has just shut, and Gary is inside.

In a pompous victory stance, Cromwell begins to wait. The only way off the island alive is now under his control, and no one said making it off the island alive was a guarantee.

This has become Cromwell’s bridge and Cromwell’s island. He is in control of them and he will decide who gets to leave and who has to stay. Gary will not be leaving…
