Too Good To Be True... (A short story Part 3)

in #fiction7 years ago (edited)

Ten years had passed, Marcus had visited Natalie a few times and they had enjoyed each other's company between the sheet. Within the fashion world she had made her mark, her line doing well under her guidance. She owned a penthouse apartment and drove the flash car. It was now her clothes that people aspired to have, hung in their wardrobes. She never gave that little 'legal' document another thought. Not until the afternoon when Marcus appeared at her door and called in his debt.

He appeared in her office on that Friday afternoon, like he had done many times over the years, but this Friday was different. There was no flowers, no cheeky smile. He just walked into her office and placed a piece of paper on her desk. Natalie looked up from my computer screen.

"Hello there." She said with a smile. "Just got a few emails to answer and then I am all yours."

He just sank into the chair across the desk from her and tapped the document he had just placed there. She looked down at it confused. At the bottom was her signature and his, but the rest of the document was alien to her. She pulled it across the desk to take a better look, 'Soul contract'. She chuckled thinking it was some romantic proposal, soul mates forever kind of thing.

But he just shook his head and whispered. "Sorry sweetness, this is real and I have come to claim my fee."

Now the document on the computer no longer seemed important, all her attention was now focused on the piece of parchment in front of her. Still the words seemed foreign to her, all that was clear was the title and her signature at the bottom. She bit upon her manicured nails nervously, as the panic rose up within her.

She had seen the films, where the character traded their soul for the dream life. Yes it had been a pinch yourself moment as she had opened the envelope, but she had worked hard these passed years. She had been successful because she was talented, not because some higher power was pulling the strings.

She looked up at Marcus, hoping to see a smile cross his lip and he would announce how he was just pulling her leg. But he just stared back at her, his eyes remorseful, yet still confirming that it was real. As she looked at him it all seemed to make sense; his devilish smile, his silvery tongue, her Marcus was as it appeared, The Devil here to collect her soul.

Feeling that she had passed the stage of denial and was beginning to see him now in a different light, his true hellish light, he began to speak and inform her what would happen next.

His words were just mumbling to her, each word becoming more distant to her then the one before it, as she began to sink in shock as the horror of what was ahead of her dawned on her.

He told her that normally these things wouldn't be called in until the signee had lived a full life, but he was in a bit of a sticky situation and he was having to pull in some of his debt a bit early.

Then he smiled and tried to tell her it wasn't too bad, that he had found away to postpone the fiery end indefinitely. He proudly announced he had made a deal with a vampire, that had agreed to turn her. Meaning she could continue living this dreamed life, just might have to have some curtains fitted so she didn't roast at her desk.

He made jokes and made it sound not to bad, but still the bottom line was in a few days she would be meeting this vampire and she would give her a bite that would part her and her soul for eternity.

It all sounded so crazy and far fetched and the more he spoke the harder it was to suppress the tears.  When she broke down into uncontrollable tears, Marcus decide maybe it was best to just stop talking and just get on with the deed.

Taking her hand, with just a little snap of his fingers her office became a blur. As the world around her cleared, She found she was no longer in her offices, no longer in the busy streets of London, she was now looking up at giant house, god knows where.

He smiled down at her. "I know it all seems horrific at the moment, like a horrible nightmare that you hope you can wake up from soon." He took her hand and she allowed him to pull her up the steps to the front door. "You really should read the fine print my love. If it appears too go to be true, then it usually is.” He brought her hand up to his lips and kissed her skin gently as the door opened and they were invited in. “You never know you might even thank me…”

At the moment in time Natalie was still suffering from shock, so he got away with that statement. However later she wished she had replied to that statement with a sharp knee to the groin.
