The false impression - part 2

Peter drove to work the following day feeling a little distressed. Something weird happened the previous night and he just couldn't wrap his head around it.  He phoned Jessica to invite her out to dinner the following evening but a man answered her phone.  The voice sounded very familiar, but he just couldn't place it at the time. At first he thought he dialed the wrong number but he checked and saw that it was definitely not the incorrect number.  He was really starting to like Jessica, and it is not as if they are exclusive but he was not willing to share her with anyone.  

He didn't call again. During the day he became so busy with work that he completely forgot about the whole ordeal and was surprised when his phone rang later that afternoon. It was Jessica. He was in the middle of something and let it go to voicemail, but she phoned twice after that and he eventually answered.  

She asked him about his day, and then asked him out to dinner.  He couldn't say no because he needed to know what was going on.  He was definitely not going to make a fool of himself hanging on to something that is not worth it. 

Jessica asked to meet at the restaurant as usual and that made him feel even more suspicious.  Why couldn't he just pick her up at her apartment? 

Jessica looked as beautiful as ever when he saw her sitting at their favorite table waiting for him. He still felt suspicious but when she got up to kiss him, he couldn't help feeling relieved.  Perhaps she had a good explanation for everything and he was just over reacting. 

He ordered their usual wine and dinner.  The conversation continued like usual and later before he could even ask, Jessica told him that she had to tell him something. All his emotions sank to his feet and he expected the absolute worst.  He wondered if she was going to dump him now or tell him that she was married or something....

"I have to tell you something, but first you need to promise me that you're not going to go crazy on me."

Peter felt awkward, took a big sip of wine and shook his head. 

"I know what you must think. We've known each other for three months now and you haven't been to my place.  The reason is that I still live with my parents."

Peter sighed.  "Why would it be an issue if you still live with your parents?"  He felt very relieved that she didn't tell him that she was married or something. 

"It's not that. The issue is not that I still live with my parents, but where we live......"

Peter smiled and took her hand. 

"I don't care about your background. I like you for who you are and not for the fact that you might not have money or that you might live in a dump." 

Jessica smiled. 

"On the contrary.  I certainly don't live in a dump, and I know it is a bit awkward, but my father wants to meet you and invited you to dinner tomorrow night."

Jessica handed him a sealed envelope and told him that there would be a car waiting for him at six o clock the following evening. She thanked him for dinner and then kissed him goodbye before she left the restaurant. Everything went so quickly he hardly had time to process anything.  After she left he ordered a whisky and opened the envelope slowly. 

His eyes couldn't believe what he was reading and he swallowed down the whisky before ordering another. 

The President of the United States invites you to a formal dinner party.

Time and date: 18h30 on Thursday 2 March 2016. 

Venue: The white house

Dress-code: Formal

No wonder the voice on the phone last night seemed so familiar.  It was her father that answered the phone. Everything suddenly made sense to him. 

He sipped down the last of his whisky and then paid the bill before leaving the restaurant with a big smile on his face.  He had to get home to see if his tuxedo still fits.
