The disappearance - Part five

in #fiction6 years ago

Jessy woke up feeling a little groggy, but she smiled when she saw James.

“My neck doesn’t hurt anymore.”

She held out her hand towards him. James moved closer and took her hand in his.

“I’m glad baby. They removed something from your neck, but nobody knows what it is. Is there anything that you can remember that you are not telling us?”

“No silly, why would I keep anything from you? The last thing that I remember was driving home from work. I felt bad that I had to work late, and I must have driven too fast. It started snowing and then I saw the headlights from a car. The lights were so bright I couldn’t see, and I must have swerved out and crashed into a tree.”

“I believe you Jess….”

Jessy felt much more normal, and reality kicked in when Julia came in to visit. Julia looked very different from what Jessy remembers, and it was clear that there was a five-year gap from the last time they saw each other.

They were all just chatting in general when two men walked in. They asked to speak to James outside and Julia stayed with Jessy.

“Sir, could we please talk outside. “ James got up and walked out with them. They walked outside the hospital building and they introduced themselves as FBI agents.

“What can I do for you guys?” James asked while lighting his cigarette.

“It’s about your wife sir. We would like to ask you a few questions.

James told them everything from the day that Jessy disappeared up to the point where she was admitted hospital.  They thanked him for his cooperation and told him that they would stay in contact. They handed him a card with a number on it.

James walked back to Jessy’s room and it felt good to hear her laughter again. She and Julia were still chatting, and Julia was trying to bring her up to date with the latest technology.

He still had to tell her about George, and he dreaded it, but as soon as  Julia left, he told her about George. Jessy cried and he just held her in his arms while she cried.

He told her about the men from the FBI and she just nodded. She didn’t care. All she wanted was to go home and get her life back to normal.  Her timeline was still stuck on five years ago, so to her it was just the next day, and she hated that she had no clue about the last five years.

Whoever did this to her must have had a master plan and they did not care about the repercussions it would have to her as a human being.  James yawned and Jessy told him that he should go home to get some rest. At first, he refused but he was really tired and promised her that he would be back in the morning.

The nurse had his number and if anything happened, he knew they would phone him immediately.  As he left the room, the nurse walked in and assured him that she would keep a special eye on Jessy. She took her vitals, and all were good.

“At this rate you might be going home tomorrow darling.”

Jessy smiled. “I really hope so.”

They brought her dinner and she ate it just as hungrily as she ate lunch. She always had a great appetite and she knew that it would help her build up her strength. The nurse left to go back to her desk to start on her paperwork for the night.

Jessy switched on the television and watched the news. It was still too much for her mind to absorb, and she wanted to take in everything she could. She still felt as if she was in a time warp, but she knew she had to accept the reality.  To her it might feel like one day, but to the rest of the world she was gone for five years.

Jessy fell asleep with the hope that she would be well enough to go home the following day. She didn’t care about anything else right now.

Somewhere in the hallway an alarm went off and all the nurses rushed to that room. No one noticed the two men entering Jessy’s room. Only when they did their final rounds for the evening, they noticed that Jessy was no longer there, and by then Jessy had already been whisked away in a private ambulance.

No one had any idea about her whereabouts and the head nurse phoned the detective that left his number earlier. She wanted to phone James but decided to wait for the detective first.

Once again Jessy Jones was missing in action and no one could explain what happened.
