John looked very worried when he sat down at the table. He knew that she went to the doctor, but he was not sure what the doctor found. 

"Perhaps she was sicker than they thought? What if she was dying? Gosh.... he couldn't even think what he would do without her." 

Maria took his hand and smiled. 

"I have some good news for you John....I'm...I am pregnant. We're going to be parents..."

John looked as if someone hit him in the face with a wet fish. 

"You're lying...how can this be?" he asked with a hoarse voice. This was so unexpected and within seconds he was by her side kissing her. He picked her up and turned her around. Maria has never seen him so happy as he was right now. 

John couldn't believe how lucky he was. He was married to the most beautiful woman in the world, and now she was giving him the best present ever. He was so excited and immediately suggested that they go out to dinner to celebrate. She felt so special, and he treated her like a queen. 

The whole idea of having a baby, had suddenly changed John into the perfect man. He put in so much effort, and he would hardly let her do anything in the house. He helped her cook in the evenings after work, and within two weeks, the usual times he worked down in the garage was long forgotten. 

He was totally focused on her and the baby and they were both so excited when he brought a wooden cot home one evening and they had to put it together. It took them the whole evening but at the end of the night it was all worth it. 

At the end of the week, they went for their first ultrasound and they were both very excited to hear that everything was fine with the baby. She has been feeling so alive these last few days and the change she saw in John was astonishing. 

On Monday morning just after John left, Maria had a special delivery. She thought that it was something for the baby, but was so surprised when she saw that it was from the editors. She knew exactly what it was. She made herself some tea, and then carefully unwrapped the box and took the book out. The book was beautiful and the photo they had chosen for the back looked stunning. 

She felt so extremely proud of herself for what she had achieved, and couldn't believe how happy she felt. She had an amazing supporting husband, a baby on the way and now she had her book. All the hopes and dreams she had since she was a child had been slowly unwrapping over the past few weeks, and she couldn't imagine being in a better place right now.  

She knew that John had given up on his dream to start his own business, and money has never meant much to her, so perhaps she could help to make his dream come true. She had her money stashed away in her account and she obviously wanted to save most for the baby, but she decided there and then that she would give John half of the money so that he could start his own business. 

John did not expect the scene he got when he arrived home later that day. Maria spent half of the day cooking him his favorite dinner and she set the table very elegantly. He was quite surprised to find her there all dressed up. He kissed her and took a seat opposite her. 

"I have a surprise for you John...." 

John also couldn't imagine anything more than he already had. He felt so content these last few weeks, and he put all his personal plans aside for his business to focus on her and the baby. 

Maria had wrapped the book in a beautiful old box, and handed the box to him.  

He looked utterly surprised and when he opened the box and could hardly believe what he held in his hands. 

He looked at it carefully and he admired the photo on the back. She had never looked more beautiful in her life. 

John was even more surprised when he opened the book and the cheque she wrote fell out. He picked up the cheque and his mouth flew open.  It was a cheque made out to him from her. 

"It's for you John, so that you too can achieve your life long dream..."

Tears welled up in his eyes when he opened the book to read the inscription she made. 

"To my darling husband...I dedicate this book to you. You are my life and my soulmate. I hope that now you can finally make all your dreams come true."

He closed the book and smiled when he read the title again. 

Behind every great man is a strong independent woman....
