The attic - Chapter 18

Sheriff Jones put the phone down after speaking to detective Santos.  He immediately dialed Moira's number and asked if she could come down to the station.  Billy and Vincent were watching a serious movie, and she whispered to Billy that she had to go and see Sheriff Jones.  He offered to stay with Vincent while she goes.  Within ten minutes Moira stopped in front of the station where Sheriff Jones was waiting for her. He offered her some coffee but she declined.  She took a seat on the opposite of his desk and he closed the door behind him.

"Listen Moira.  I have some sensitive information that I want to share with you, but please don't let any of this get out. This is a very difficult situation and I wanted you to be the first to know."

Moira felt the blood rushing to her head, and she felt lightheaded and anxious.  She nervously moved closer to the desk and sat on the edge of the chair.

"We have the DNA results back and the result is astonishing."  Moira could feel her heart beating faster, but she took a deep breath and listened to what he had to say. Sheriff Jones continued.

"Detective Santos paid a visit to Vincent's alleged parents. His so called biological father, still blames himself for Vincent's kidnapping. We know now that he was not involved.  The fact of the matter is, he is also not Vincent's biological father, although he is under the impression that he is."

Moira's eyes widened.  She took a deep breath and could feel the panic welling up in her throat. She took a sip of water and tried to relax.

"Do you know who his father is?"

Sheriff Jones nodded.  "Yes, we do. It is the alleged kidnapper.  Allister MacCrae."

Moira struggled to breath and took a deep breath before answering.  She sat back in the chair and put her hands in front of her eyes.

"How can a mother and father do this to their own child? What is going to be the next step now sheriff?"

Moira felt as if she could burst out crying again, and try to prevent making a fool of herself again, by biting her lip.

Sheriff Jones could see that she was terribly upset and it was understandable.

"Well there is no evidence of any kidnapping. It was all a big fat scam. I've dug a little deeper into Allister's history and the only thing that we have against him is possession of drugs. We can not charge him with kidnapping as the mother was fully aware that he was still alive and she was the one that gave him to his father. It is an extremely delicate situation now. "

"All evidence points to the mother. We don't have much on Allister so there is no reason for us to keep him in custody.  Chances are that he will be released soon...."

"And what exactly is going to happen to Vincent?"

"That my dear, I can't tell you.  He will definitely be evaluated first by the psychologist before he will be sent back."

"What do you mean sent back? "

Moira said anxiously and started to get apprehensive again.  Her heart was racing, and it felt like her head was going to explode.

"It might take a while, in the meantime he can stay with you as long as it is needed. Please don't get upset now. It could still get worse, and there is absolutely nothing that we can do about it."

Moira felt dead inside when she left the sheriff's office. She was saddened by the turn of events and struggled to process what the sheriff told her.

When she arrived home, Vincent and Billy were grilling some steaks and they welcomed her with a glass of wine.  She drank the wine as quickly as possible and asked for a second glass.  She went outside to smoke a cigarette and then went inside to make a salad to eat with the steaks.  Billy tried to ask her what was wrong but she showed him with her eyes that she couldn't speak in front of Vincent.

Vincent left the kitchen to go and wash his hands and Moira quickly told Billy that she would tell him everything once Vincent is asleep.  She felt a little better through dinner and while she washed the dishes and cleaned up the mess in the kitchen, Vincent took a bath and emerged half an hour later looking like a new sixpence.

She had bought him some new clothes after his stuff got stolen. Vincent wished them both a good night, and went straight to bed. Moira checked on him half an hour later and he was already fast asleep.  She closed the door behind her and went back to the kitchen and poured herself a fourth glass of wine.  She took a seat next to the wheelchair, and started to tell Billy the whole story.

Billy just sat there shaking his head.  He didn't have words to express how he felt, but he too felt totally helpless and lost.  Nothing that they did was going to change the way of things, and they just had to wait it out.

Neither of them had any idea of what to do, but they both knew that they would fight there arms off to keep Vincent safe.

They both had way to much to drink and Moira suggested that Billy spent the night there.

With all the stress of the previous two weeks they were able to rekindle their love for each other that night, and afterwards they fell asleep in each other's arms. They both woke up at three o clock that morning, when Vincent started screaming again.  Moira told Billy to go back to sleep and went to Vincent's room to be with him. Once again, she stroked his hair and fell asleep with the boy in her arms.

Tomorrow was his second session with the psychologist and Moira hoped that they could put an end to these nightmares once and for all.

I am really enjoying the story. I can feel for the characters and I am hoping for a nice ending for poor Vincent.

this is so disheartening, as a kid, it is really going to take Vincent a lot to live with this, i really wish he gets told at the right time. even a grown man can't live with this. thanks @giantbear for this great work, anticipating for the next chapter.
