Memories of a lifetime- Chapter 8

                            

Jonathan woke up Lorraine just after seven o clock. He was already dressed and ready to go to the hospital.  Lorraine didn't get much sleep at all and seemed disorientated. She lay still for a few minutes, before going to the bathroom to take a quick shower. 

Jonathan was anxious, and he wanted to get to his sister as soon as possible. Even at the age of nineteen, they had a very strong bond and was more connected than ever. Lorraine shivered again at the mere thought of losing Chloe. In a way she would have lost both her children, because Jonathan would never have been the same person again. 

There was no time for breakfast and Jonathan said they could grab something at the hospital. Lorraine phoned Alicia to tell her that they were leaving and that they would meet her at the hospital later. 

Within half an hour they walked into Chloe's room. She was awake, and cried when she saw them. She was in a lot of pain with the broken ribs, and said that it was uncomfortable with the cast on her leg. She looked miserable but at least she was alive. 

Lorraine kissed Chloe on the forehead and told her that it was going to be okay. Jonathan took a seat on the other side and sat there holding his sister's hand while crying. 

"I was so scared Chloe. It's all my fault. I should've never let you go out last night."

"It's not your fault John, you know if I put my mind on something there is nothing you can do to stop me..."

"Well I'm just glad to see that you are okay Chloe.  No use crying over spilled milk...I'm just glad that both of my kids are fine." 

Lorraine chipped in before the twin's discussion turned into a heated argument.

Alicia walked in right after, and Chloe was glad to see her. They all sat talking for a while before the doctor came in to check on Chloe. He was very surprised to see Lorraine, as he was a huge fan, and explained the whole procedure to her. He assured them all that Chloe would be fine, although she would be in pain for a while with the broken ribs. 

Even though he was impressed with Lorraine, he was much more impressed with her assistant, and he wondered if she lived in New York. He would have loved to take her out sometime and hoped that Alicia would be there when he did his afternoon rounds. He did not see a ring on her finger and he hoped that she was not seeing someone. His heart bounced at the mere thought of Alicia. He has never been so taken with anyone and he hoped there was a chance for them to spend some time together. 

Alicia did not even notice his fascination because she was so focused to hear about Chloe's recovery, but Lorraine did, and after he left the room, she told Alicia that the doctor had the hots for her. Alicia laughed and told her that she was imagining things. 

Lorraine was hungry and sent Jonathan to go and get something to eat for everyone in the hospital cafeteria. Lorraine couldn't stop talking about the young vibrant doctor who had the hots for Alicia, and even Chloe saw the look from the doctor, and they were amazed that Alicia did not pick up on the vibe. 

"Did your mom tell you that she went out on a date Chloe?" Alicia said jokingly to stop them from talking about her. 

It struck Lorraine like a lightning beam and she realized that Alex must be thinking the worst of her now, because she did not let him know that she was leaving Paris. 

Alicia saw the look on Lorraine's face and immediately apologized for being out of place. 

"No it's not that Alicia. Everything happened so suddenly I never had a chance to tell Alex that I was leaving Paris."

"I'm sure he would understand if you explained. Why don't you give him a call now?"

Lorraine shuddered to think what Alex must have thought if he had phoned the hotel, and he did not have her private number although she had his. She has never been one for texting but she took his number just in case something prevented her of going out. 

She decided to text him. 

Dear Alex, I am in New York

My daughter was in a car accident and I had to get here asap. She is okay. Will make arrangements to meet up soon. 

Lorraine

Alex couldn't believe his luck. After he phoned the hotel and heard that Lorraine booked out, he felt devastated. For the first time in fifteen years, he had met someone that he completely got along with, and now she was gone. He drove to the gallery and felt quite frustrated. Poor Francois did not know what hit him, and Alex acted like a bear with a sore tooth the whole day. Nothing Francois did was right, and Francois was extremely glad when it was four o clock and he could finally go home. He just left when the text came through from Lorraine, and unfortunately he was not there to see the look on Alex's face. 

Alex couldn't believe that he was such a jerk to Francois and decided to take him out to dinner to make up for it. He immediately texted back Lorraine and he was overjoyed when he realized that she didn't ditch him completely. At least now he had her number and he could text her.

Lorraine felt a little flutter in her stomach when Alex texted back, and she couldn't believe it but she was actually missing him. Jonathan decided to stay at the hospital but Lorraine and Alicia decided to go and do some shopping and grab a proper lunch. The hospital muffins were not the greatest and Lorraine's stomach was growling when they left.  

They found a secluded restaurant where it would be safe for Lorraine to eat without being disturbed by too many people.  They ordered lunch and talked about the accident. They were both so relieved that it was not worse, and Alicia promised to stay behind for a few weeks after Chloe was discharged to keep an eye on the twins. 

The discussion turned towards Alex, and Lorraine told Alicia exactly how she felt. There was an unexplained bond between her and Alex and it happened so fast, but it was something that she wanted to cling to. After a proper lunch they went shopping and bought Chloe some proper pajamas and a few silly presents just to make her day. 

The nurses laughed when they walked into the hospital with arms full of presents and balloons and it looked like they were arranging a party.  They ran into the doctor outside Chloe's room and he helped them put everything inside. While Lorraine gave Chloe all her presents, the doctor asked if he could see Alicia outside. Neither Lorraine or Chloe noticed that she left the room but was surprised to see her a few minutes later. 

She walked in like the queen of England and waved at them smiling. 

"You were right. He asked me out."

Both Chloe and Lorraine shrieked and Chloe gave Lorraine a "light" high five because she was still in pain. 

Lorraine suddenly wondered what Alex was doing and had an intense feeling of despair.
