"Q" Chapter 36

in #fiction7 years ago (edited)

I opened the door. There were two policemen outside.

.......................................................................................................................................................................................
(present day)

One stood facing me while the other stood a ways back. He didn’t have his hand on his sidearm...not quite. I noticed the retention strap had been released though.

We would like to ask you some questions” the one in front of me shouted. He was only a yard or so away,.....and I could barely hear him...I read his lips actually.

The cop looked inside my room from outside the door. I hadn’t invited him in. He didn’t come in but the door was open and nothing stopped him from looking. He did that. Oddly enough he wasn’t pushy. It didn’t really matter, he could see everything but the bathroom, even the balcony, from where he stood. Lucky for me Jenny had cleaned it up while I was away. It was spic and span.

First impressions matter, you never get a second chance to make one..

What?” I could hear him because of the noise reduction system in my new headset. It might look like a pair of cheap sun glasses but it was packed full of nifty features. Otherwise the loud music would have drown him out. I pretended like it did that. I pretended like I could barely hear him.

He started to shout again then appeared to think better of it. He indicated that he wanted me to follow him. I complied.

The nice police men escorted me down the stairs, and across the sidewalk to their squad car. I was invited inside,

........they insisted.

They sat up front. I was in the back. There were no door handles on the inside in the back where I was and there was a wire mesh on the windows and one between the back seat and the front seat.

I was a prisoner.

Damn that music is loud” one of them said. "It’s STILL loud. Even out here, in the car, with the windows up. How can you stand it?

He started the car and we drove off. I hadn’t expected to be going anywhere. I started to say something.

Anything you say can be held against you” Kitty texted me. She had apparently arrived and had taken charge. Jenny, as usual when Kitty was present, was silent. Tiny laser beams in my glasses beamed the text directly into my eyes. Cool. Jenny hadn’t gotten around to explaining that part to me yet. Obviously it was wireless. I idly wondered about it’s range.

I caught myself before I said anything and just nodded.

"I’ll keep the coffee on Sir.” more text, this time from Jenny, oddly enough I could tell it was from Jenny and not Kitty, "I don’t think that you will be gone long.

While we were riding to the cop shop Jenny and I practiced. The cops might have thought I had a twitch or something if they could have seen the way I was blinking. The spectacles tracked my pupils. If I focused on a certain letter on a virtual keyboard and blinked, that was the same as hitting a key on my wireless keyboard back in the room. If I still had it. Jenny might have sold it too.

They couldn’t see my eyes though. The lens of the glasses had turned dark in the sunlight.
