#1 :U-Store-It Home

...............................................................................................................................................................

Levi Cupping unlocked the door and hobbled into the U-Store-it unit that served him as a home.

Just inside the door were cardboard boxes that he’d taken from the dumpsters of nearby grocery stores. They were stacked to the ceiling just a few feet back from the entrance. The stacked boxes created the illusion that the storage unit was packed floor to ceiling. Actually it was just one row of empty cardboard boxes. It was a wall.

Behind that cardboard wall, was his home. He had a bed, a chair and table, a chest of drawers and a composting toilet that used shredded cedar. He’d made it all himself with cardboard, duct tape and ‘poor man’s fiberglass’, he also had a battery-powered lamp that he kept charged from a solar panel. He’d found the solar panel while dumpster diving, just as he’d found many other things. It never ceased to amaze hime what people threw away.

He was rather proud of his set-up. It wasn’t original. He’d read about it online once and it had stuck with him. He had decided that it was a great idea. Any downside to living in a storage unit was on someone else. It was all positives for him. He taken the idea, improved upon it, and made it his own. If he had to ‘abandon ship’ and run, nothing was irreplaceable. Other than time, he had a minimal investment in the contents, just sweat equity.

Levi closed the door behind him. He’d just paid the rent. He was good for another month. While he’d been out he’d disposed of the plastic sack that he used in his composting toilet and picked up another couple of gallons of water.

Life was good.

What was that on the table? Had someone been in here while he was gone? No one was supposed to be able to do that. Of course he wasn’t supposed to sleep in here either, so he wasn’t likely to complain.

What was it?

A magic wand? He started to laugh a bit hysterically until he noticed that there was a note taped to it.

My father told me about Arthur C. Clarke, a very good writer, who liked to read another phrase of his authorship, greetings friend, good content.

Nice start, I have often wondered if there are folks that live out of storage units. Now I know. Good Read.

Looking forward to more of this one.
