Chapter 134: Were You Bluffing Sir?

The jerk, actually his name was Charlie, asked Roy after the squad cars had departed.

“No Charlie I wasn’t. I actually am the Sheriff here.” Roy told him.

“But ..but..but was what he said about not being in the same state true too?” Charlie was dumbfounded.

“Yes it was.” Sally told him. "When the river rises, as it does quite often, several times in some years, the floods come and everything for miles around is underwater. Surely you know that?

“Yes ma’am I do” Charlie said.

“When the river recedes, the land becomes visible again..right?” Sally prompted.

“Yes Ma’am it does.” Charlie waited for the punchline.

“How often does the river return to it’s old bed?” she asked him.

“Now that you mention it.” Charlie had thoughtful look on his face. " Not every time. In fact some years it swaps beds almost every time we have a heavy rain fall.”

“You mean?” a light had begun to dawn.

“Yes Charlie.” Roy told him gently. "Do you suppose that the State Line changes every time it rains?”

“No sir I don’t.” Charlie told him.

“It so happens that the state line.” Roy pointed in the direction that the police had gone. "Is that way. The river happens to be the other direction...today.”

“When it rains that could change.” Sally said. "I’m surprised that the police don’t know that. Is public education really that bad? What do they teach you in geography class.”

“What’s a geography class?” Charlie asked them.
