#27: Back to Levi - Cop Stop

Days Later

Levi was traveling in the bicycle lane. He was standing upright on his uni-wheel. He held his staff in one hand. It was stuck in a hole in the Uni-wheel frame. It stood upright. He had the thumb of his other hand hooked into hi belt. His beard streamed behind him, he leaned slightly forward. He was traveling at bicycle speed to meet his next customer.

“Uh Oh.” Jeannie said. “There’s a cop that just pulled in behind us. Ooops, he turned on his lights.”

The cruiser’s siren whooped.

Levi Stopped. He stepped off the uni-wheel, extracted the strap and carried it from his shoulder like a purse. He turned to face the cop.

The cop, a tubby feller who looked like he’d never missed a meal in his life, waddled up to Levi.

“Where are you going?” he asked.

“Why do you want to know?” Levi replied.

“Are you resisting?” The Cop said. He pulled out a baton and extended it.

“Resisting what?” Levi replied.

“Stop resisting” the Cop said and swung the baton, HARD, at Levi’s shoulder.

TWHACK! The baton hit Levi’s arm, HARD.

Levi just stood there. He looked at the cop with contempt. “Was that really necessary?”

“Stop Resisting” The cop swung again and again. The blows had no obvious effect. Levi stood patiently while the cop worked off his frustration.

It didn't’ happen. The cop got more frustrated and angrier and angrier. He used his handheld to call for backup. He gave them some kind of code. It sounded urgent.

Another cop car arrived on the scene. Then another and another. They soon had the road blocked. Traffic stopped. People stepped out of their cars and used their smart phones to video a half dozen cops using riot batons to pound on Levi.

Levi seemed unaffected. The Duster Protected him.

Ahem Levi said. “If Ya’ll have got that out of your system what can I do for you? What do you want?”

“Stop resisting!” several of the cops shouted in unison.

“Resist WHAT?” Levi asked. “No one has said anything. Ya’ll just started beating on me!”

One of the cops, a senior officer by his demeanor, walked up to Levi and said “ We think you are trafficking in drugs.”

“Why?” Levi said.

“Stop resisting” the officer replied.

Levi uttered the magic words. “Constitutional rights. I want to see my lawyer”.

The cops froze. Then they rushed him. They bore him to the ground and held him and beat on him while they patted him down. They searched him. They found nothing.

They let him up.

“We’ll let you off lightly this time” the boss-cop said to Levi. “You better watch it though. We’ve got our eye on you.”

The cops all got in their cars and drove away. All the bystanders pocketed their smartphones, got in their cars and drove away also. Soon Levi was standing there all alone.

“No more Mr. Nice Guy” he said to himself.

“Well Jeanie” he said . “That settled that. I think it’s time to go to phase two. Time to start looking for a legitimate place to live.”
